I have been dealing with my inability to continue my weight loss for several months as some of you may remember.

it has been a difficult spring ,summer  and fall in that I have been having severe trouble with my memory, inability to focus, forgetfulness, etc,to the point that I began to fear early onset Alzheimer, which my mom developed when she was 55 yrs( I am 57.  Also dealing with inappropriate bouts of anger and unlike me episodes of riduculous behavior ( left DD house in a tiff one day and walked 2 hours down the interstate in 100 degree heat in July, with DD trailing behind me in her car all the way down the interstate till DH could get there to get me.)

I was becoming so concerned I saw a geriatrician who specializes in Alzheimers who sent me for a MRI of the head and neck looking for any kind of dementia, which was negative, thank God. he also gave me a alzheimer screening test of which I missed 2 questions, which was not bad.

Turns out after lab work,my thyroid is very wonky, even on medication ( malabsorption?) and that along with depression, malabsorbing that med also??,and newly diagnosed AADD, (adult attention deficit disorder) is all making up this pseudo dementia business.

he is following my thyroiid very closely and watching the depression etc. I recently took a really good look at my labs, haven't had enough sense to look at them in almost a year and to my horror noticed my Ferritin is 9.6!!!  All else is pretty good, but on research, found out that low ferritin can cause forgetfullness and memory problems!! GAH!! not to mention tirdeness which has also plagued me.

I will be making an appointment with him next week to see about a possible hematology referral. Don't know at what point iron infusions are required, but am going to ask for one anyway.  I was taking Bifera, until I was unable to find it in the store and kept meaning to order some Tender Iron from Vitalady but just couldn't remember. I will be ordering some next week and starting it even if I get iron infusions.

S

eriously need to get on top of this situation and seriously need to get back to losing, which he said we will work on my thyroid till we get it to a point that it wwill let me lose.

A

ny thoughts from anyone?

Thanks,

Holly

I have also gained 12 pounds, this last year,in spiite of consistently staying on my plan, low cqrb high prootein including dense protein and shakes.

I'm so sorry you're going through so much, I really am. :(   Try to get a copy of your last few years of labs and if the hematologist fights you on infusions try to see if your WLS surgeon can give you a referral to one that "gets" WLS... and don't take ferrous sulfate if he tries to pu****that stuff is garbage. I hope the endo can get your thyroid issues sorted out. Regain can really mess with your mind. Please stay hooked in here with us and keep us posted. (((hugs)))

Thanks Gina. I took your excellent advice and have been tracking my labs, plus have copies of all of them since several months before my surgery and they are on a spread sheet so that part is covered, thanks goodness. Probably couldn't do it  now to save my life.

I will make a note of the ferrous sulfate being a no and I know  nothing in an oil will work cause I have acid issues with meds as well.

My WLS is in MX so that isn't an avenue but my PCP and the nurse practitioner who follows my bioidentical hormones are both good about referring.

The regain is almost as bad  to me as everything elsp put together. It is too much like the pre WLS times when no matter how well I stayed on program I would gain. Totally scaring me to death cause I can't go back there. That scares me almost as much as the thought of having Alzheimer does, having watched my mother deteriorate right before my very eyes for 15 years before she passed.

Thanks for the hugs and will keep all posted.

Hi Holly!

Sorry you are having such a rough spell. My thyroid was also out of whack since surgery. Now I set my alarm and take my synthroid at 430 am with water I leave on my nightstand. It seems to help with absorption because I wont have anything else in my stomach for at least an hour. My numbers have improved.

My ferritin was down to 3, but I was experiencing heavy periods. Thank goodness I have had an endometrial ablation so now my periods are light. My bariatrician put me on ferrousforte, I take them twice a day. It has helped my anemia and slowly increasing my ferritin levels. I wait 2 hours after my calcium to take my iron with 250 mg of vitamin c.

Glad you are on top of things now and hopefully will be feeling better soon!

So glad the ole brain is ok! It must have been frightening to think of having alzhiemer at such a young age.

Thanks,Maria. Yeah, the thought of developing Alzheimer young has always scared my two sisters and I to death. We watched our mom deteriorate right before our very eyes and this was before the advent of internet in every ones lives,in the mid 80's and no one knew hardly anything about it. The one paragraph in the hard copy encyclopedia(yeah, imagine that, lol) was enough to scare us all to pieces.  We watched her and suffered right along with her for the res of her life,15 more years. The first thing I did was smile and praise God when I found out she had passed and couldn't hardly grieve properly cause I was so glad she had been released from hell on earth.

I do the same thing with my thyroiid except I have also been breaking mine in half to help the absorption, also.

I will make a note of the ferrous forte. Does it cause any unusual issues with constipation? I have a poop program in place anyway, but just  asking.I do also separate my vite exactly that way. I think part of my problem was that I couldn't remember to buy them, get them in my divided pill box and or take them for days on end.

Will keep all posted.

I have had problems with constipation since surgery, and the iron seemed to make it a liitle worse. So now I take magnesium with  my calcium 3 doses and miralax every day. Keeps me pretty regular except for the awful days at work when I dont get all my liquids in.
