Introduction and a few questions
"My concern with the VSG is the overall lower percentage of weight loss."
Actually, with the right surgeon, the results with VSG should be right there with RnY. I know my surgeon gets pretty much the same average excess weight loss with both procedures and believes that in another 5 years hardly anyone will be getting RnY and VSG will be the gold standard. That's also what you see when you look at studies but since the VSG isn't a standardized operation yet there is more variation in results.

What I love about this forum is the respect everyone has for each other. There are no surgery wars here. You will find excellent, excellent info on each type.
I was 54 when I had surgery and wanted the most effective surgery possible. Actually had I known more about the DS and pushed harder I probably would have opted for DS. My surgeon would not consider it. He did tell me if I chose VSG that was phase one to the DS in the event down the road I needed to convert to DS. But at the time my BMI did not qualify me for DS. Different surgeons have different criteria about who qualifies for DS. Nevertheless my RNY has been very successful.
I chose RNY for the malabsorption. At my ag,e I knew this was it. I needed every extra boost I could possible get to get this weight off. The VSG is a great surgery and almost switched right before surgery but was afraid my insurance would want to requalify me. The one thing I like about the VSG is the ability to take NSAIDS, like the DS. I am a little concerned about not being able to take NSAIDS ever again. I hurt my back a few weeks back, and I sure could use them right now
All in all, I could not be happier with my RNY. I hit goal but dance all around it, but that is my fault. If I was as strict on my food choices as the first year, I would be living below my goal weight. This morning I was 3.5 up. My plan is to drop 5 prior to the Holidays.
Good luck with your journey. This is an exciting time for you. Welcome to this board.

You guys are so awesome! What a warm welcome I've received :). The NSAIDs are definitely a concern for me since I am relatively young (29). It's hard for me to imagine never needing an ibuprofen for the rest of my life ya know? I saw a couple other comments about the DS, and while this surgery is definitely appealing to me, it's just not an option, because my insurance (tricare) doesn't cover it, and the only military treatment facility they are currently doing it is in Washington state...and I'm in Georgia...otherwise I would very seriously consider it.
With all the encouragement I have been frequenting the VSG board the last few days, and wow! There are same pretty inspiring stories on there as well. Hopefully discussing with my surgeon will help me make the choice too. Honestly right now I feel almost totally 50-50 between the RNY and VSG.
Ive noticed that there seems to be a huge variation in pre and post op diets depending on the surgeon...does anyone know why? The consistent variable are very high protein and vitamin supplements.
Did anyone here rUn into negative feedback being a lightweight and considering surgery? My parents, husband, and sister are very supportive. But at the last meeting unattended a lady kept asking me why I wanted surgery because I looked just fine (she was also obese, just larger than me). Not going to lie...I felt kind of judged.
