Weekly Maintenance Post
Well, maybe it is not a weekly maintenance post, but close enough.
How is everyone doing on this roller coaster we call maintenance? Hope everyone is finding their way. I know that I have good days and I have bad days. I think the good still out number the bad thank goodness. But for me, it has to be on my mind every single day.
Do you remember right before and right after your surgery? I bet it was like me and everything was all about "you". This was your time. You took the time to make your plans for eating and exercise. I know life takes over and it can't always be about "you," but we really do need to focus on ourselves so we can stay successful and not fall back into the old habits that we had pre WLS.
The questions this week are:
What was one main reason you had WLS? Was it just to lose weight? Have you accomplished this?
What have you been successful at this week?
What have you had problems with this week?
Here are my answers:
One main reason I had WLS was to get off Diabetes meds and so I could stop sticking my finger!! I hated sticking my finger. Of course I wanted to lose weight, but I wanted to be healthy and be around to see my DGD's grow up and be able to really play with them. Yes I have accomplished getting off the Diabetes meds and all my prescription meds except one hormone that has nothing to do with weight!! I do play with my DGD's and am loving it.
Success this week. I did a 5K Trail run Saturday morning - my best time of 36.02 minutes. I've done pretty good with my eating this week.
Problems this week. Sweets - of course - if I know it is around it drives me crazy!!!! No exercise since the run Saturday morning. My legs are giving me some problems so I'm taking a break this week. My problem is I need to go to the gym but I am such a procrastinator....
If you see someone post something that you can help them with - please respond to them. There is a very large group of us in maintenance so it would be great to see more sharing their experience. Even pre WLS and people not in maintenance can get information from this post to see what changes they could make now to help them later on.
Hope everyone is having a great week. My last day at work this week - yeah!!

Great post Linda!
Since only 1 of my DD's supported me wholeheartdly about having WLS I had to try and not make it about me. DH and DD#1 really got upset just thinking about it. After surgery I also tried to avoid making it about me because even though I was struggling early out with my decision I didn't want them to say "we told you".
After I hit about 75 lbs. then it started being about me....Shoppings..Shopping..Shopping!!!!. I used to buy for DD#3 because I hated buying for myself..well long story short...I lost my shopping buddy...LOL
What was one main reason you had WLS? Was it just to lose weight? Have you accomplished this? I didn't have any health problems so I had surgery strictly for weight loss and since I'm almost 4 years out I consider myself pretty successful.
What have you been successful at this week? I did pretty good this week. I've been watching my carbs pretty close and trying to concentrate on Protein.
What have you had problems with this week? I didn't eat much over the weekend and I even skipped a few Protein drinks...bad bad bad.

God is walking with me every step of the way. Because of HIM this is possible!!

I had WLS because I had reached a point where I just dropped out of life - not to mention, of course my comorbidities. While my BP has returned, I take only 1 med now.
Yes, I have accomplished my goal of weight loss and living. I am far more active and do not hesitate to leave the house to go places. The biggest blessing of all is being able to open my closet door knowing I will have more than enough to wear, and once dressed I know I will feel good about my appearance. No more hiding and sitting in our truck while my husband runs all our errands, etc.
Success this week: Even though I gained more than a few pounds, I am trying to get back on track. Last night I walked 4 miles and will do the same today.
Problems: Night time snacking. I can eat so little and so healthy throughout the day, but when evening comes....OH BROTHER! The frustrating thing is I KNOW I'm not hungry; I'm eating out of habit. I really need to beat that habit. I try to make wise choices, but it does not always turn out that way.

Isn't it wonderful to be able to enjoy life now? I already have another closet full of clothes again and now love to shop.
Glad you are able to get out and about doing things.
Way to go on the walking.
I can relate to the night time snacking. It is so hard to stop that. Some nights I just go ahead and brush my teeth because I know I won't usually eat after I do that-LOL!!

Why did I want surgery???? to get my life back. I wanted off my meds and off the CPAC but I wanted to be able to enjoy life instead of half way living it. Did I succeed? Absoluely. I love being able to exercise, enjoy my ponies and be active.
Success: I went from 118 to 117 last week and have been at 116 several days both weeks. As my knee continues to improve, I can do more and more. I have exercised every day lately, either riding my pony, Zumba or weights/machines.
Problems: Lots of work stress but I haven't let it get me down. Haven't been perfect eating (chips and a piece of a brownie last night) but have done ok.

Mine wasn't all about me just before and after surgery since dh also had the DS as well but it was about US.
What was one main reason you had WLS? Was it just to lose weight? Have you accomplished this?
Main reason I had surgery...to get off insulin and to lose weight. I would have considered myself a success if I had just gotten to my lowest adult weight of 150. To go lower was a fantastic bonus. But my success was not just getting off insulin but getting off NINE of my ELEVEN prescription meds. The two left are thyroid related and weight had nothing to do with them.
What have you been successful at this week?
Getting in more protein...food based mostly.
What have you had problems with this week?
Sweets and carbs....it doesn't help when I go low on my blood sugar and I have to get it up quickly. But I do try to follow it with protein/fat to keep it from going down again.

Linda, I check my blood sugar once a day...one day in the morning, next day in the evening. That's when I remember to check, LOL...but I also check when I feel myself feeling funky...(LOW). If I get clammy feeling, shakey, etc, it's time to check...and I usually treat it AS I am checking.
I use to use Jelly Beans for my lows...now it's hard candies...with my jaw surgery, I have to suck on them so they last quite awhile.
He's doing great...he hit a low of 147 and is back up to 151. But he's stayed pretty stable this last year. HIS surgeon stated that for people who live with each other, the same surgery is best. And since I was getting the DS, he gave him the DS. I think if Medicare had covered the VSG at the time, we would have both ended up with that instead...but then again, the DS was best for me and my diabetes.
