Good Morning. Are you taking your vitamin K's?

...especially you malabsorbers. You need to be testing and taking your vitamin K1 and K2. K2 is a relative new vitamin on the scene, so you may not see many medical folks talking about it. K2 is critical to bone health along with vitamin D3 and calcium. Do some research and decide if you should be getting K2 to support your bone density. They're also seeing that a deficiency in vitamin k2 may lead to increased arterial plaque. I'm thinking my hubby with his high cholesterol should be taking more K2. Currently the only test that we can see some indication if K2 is working is through the osteocalcin test. Not many medical folks have heard of this one either. Try to research and then educate the folks that order your labs.

K1 supports blood coagulation. Do you bruise easily? You may need more vitamin K1. Most bariatric surgeons understand the need for K1, so just check your vitamins and see that you're getting some, ask to have vitamin K1 tested on your labs and don't take the guff that there is no test for vitamin K1-- there is.

End of public service announcement. Y'all have a great day.

K2 doesn't seem to be in the 90 Vitalady starter pack that's enroute to me.  She does however sell it, so I'll have to bear that in mind (Amazon sells K2 in cap form, so I'm guessing that's not dry form).

I'll bookmark this (not on OH) for future reference.  Thanks.

Vitalady gets her K2 from BioTech and it's dry. Vitalady just has them label hers with her Tender label but it's BioTech's. Link to BioTech www.biotechpharmacal.com/catalog/mk-7-vitamin-k2/

I take a lot, I think--600mcg. I started with 150mcg a day but we were watching my labs real close since I already have osteoporosis. My dietitian actually suggested going up to 600mcg a day.

You would probably be ok if you start with 150mcg a day but keep an eye on bone density when it comes time to get a dexa scan.

My K isn't tested so I wouldn't even know if it was low.  but I see the Nut this week to discuss labs so I'll ask.

Drive a pony, get groceries for a picnic for my agency this evening then do the prep for the training I am sneeking in.  Figure while I have everyone feeding them, I'll train them too.

I know I am not taking K2...but I am taking K1. My surgeon doesn't even test everything I need so I am trying to get moved to dh's surgeon/nut as a backup to my PCP for follow up care. My PCP needs a bariatric surgeon to order all my labs...just the internal policy I have to deal with. Since we will be moving out of this area next summer/fall, I'm hoping dh's will "pick me up". There is NOT a DS surgeon in the Birmingham area.

I know I am getting enough K1 cause the bruising I use to do easily has disappeared. I still bruise if I hit things hard enough but not the way I use to...you could have LOOKED at me and I would bruise.

It's suppose to rain/thunder here. We were gonna go to the park to let the puppies run but apparently not today.

I just posted on M&M about bleeding gums.  I don't bruise easily at all.  Quite the opposite, but I haven't been good about my vitamins and my gums are bleeding really bad when I brush my teeth.  I went to the dentist in June and I don't have gingivitis at all.  What vitamin do I need to double up on?  Could vitamin K be the culprit?  I am going to call the surgeons office and get labs this week before my appointment next week.

Thanks,
Tonya

Try some Vitamin C, if you aren't already taking it.
