After WLS

I posted a similar question on the VSG board but I thought I would post it here also.  Is it just as  harder to lose a regain after surgery as it is before?  I am still on the fence about having WLS.

I think it's more like WLS puts us on an even playing field with normally slimmer folks. It's still a struggle but doable.

I have also found it easier to maintain my weight.  I don't know if that is because I have been in a mindset of losing/exercising/watching or because of the changes to my body.  This is the first time in my adult life I have weighed the same two years in a row.

I generally stay within a three pound range. I had my VSG 28 months ago.

I went on a 2.5 week vacation at the end of May.  Three homes, a hotel, lots of parties and tons of eating out. On the trip I noticed I was up to 146 which is 3 pounds over my comfort zone. I've been home since the 15th of June.with careful eating the last two weeks, I am back to 141 this morning.this was the most significant gain i have had since surgery.  I ate whatever I wanted while away, but not an entire ice cream, just a few spoons etc.  still mindful of what I ate.  Prior to WLS my weight would have continued to escalate when I got home.  Having the Sleeve makes it so much easier to jump right back on to my strict plan of weighing daily, logging all of my food, watching calories and carbs etc.

I love my Sleeve!

I have not had a lot of regain, just a few pounds.  It was much easier to get back on track and get it back off.

First I want to tell you that having my RNY was the best decision I have ever made for myself!!! I can't imagine anything being easier to loose weight and then keep it off.

Before WLS I would join WW, diet, lose some weight, quit the diet and eat what I want, and then gain back my weight...repeating this over and over again for years.

After WLS with help from my tool it was pretty easy for me to get off the extra weight and get to goal. I spend a lot of time on the LW board learning what to eat, how much to eat, and gaining a lot of knowledge on keeping my weight off.

Now that I'm at goal and getting close to my 4 year mark I still have some help from my tool but I could easily eat myself to being obese again. BUT...I have chosen not to! I know I have to limit my carbs, I still dump slightly on sugar but I have to make the decision to make good choices and limit sugar, I have to get in my 100+ Protein ( I use shakes) a day, and I have to take my supplements.

That might sound difficult or even impossible to you, but I am so happy being at a normal BMI, wearing size 4 clothes, being able to walk, jump rope, play with the grandkids etc. that it is pretty easy for me.

Only you can make this decision but if you do, learn as much as you can about your surgery type and make sure it is the right one for you.

on Maintenance

I have had to completely redefine how I eat as a result of my surgery, and that should help me maintain the majority of my weight loss.   The surgery also gave me a big jump on losing weight so I could become more active.

Bottom line - if I would have been able to make all these dietary changes (and maintain them!) and work (for several years) to get to the place where I could be this active, I would be able to maintain this weight.  But after dieting for 25 years, I was not able to do that.  Therefore, the surgery was the right choice for me.
