Dumping ????

So, I have not really tested the waters when it comes to sugar.....never really thought I would make it this long but with being a slow loser I just thought it would be best to stay as low carb as possible and avoid sugars.  I have also never known a person post WLS who later said I wish I had tasted a cookie sooner!

Yesterday morning I had plain greek yogurt with added SF pudding mix in it for breakfast at work.  Then had 2  teaspoons (apprx)  of peanut butter.  I then ate a handful of honey roasted nuts (unusual that I have honey roasted)...THEN I ate 4 pieces of chocolate covered popcorn (left over at work from a baby shower we had on monday).  A little while later I am heading to a meeting and start to feel weird...woozy....faint like.  Luckily the meeting was sitting down and informal...I continue to feel sick, nauseous, have trouble concentrating, sort of feeling like I am going to pass out (no sweating).....after about 30 min it passes...I told the folks that I needed to sit a little longer as I think I ate too much sugar (they have seen me pass by any cookie, cake, chocolate, etc quietly over the past year).

My question is:  for those of you who have experienced dumping.....do you think it was that or reactive hypoglycemia??  Personally, I hope I dump.  I need every negative reinforcement I can get....early out and presurgery I remember thinking....not sure if I want to dum*****t.....now I am okay with it.  LOL.

I plan on continuing on my low sugar, no bread journey as long as I can...

Thanks!!

i don't know that I have had a real dump but I have had what I think of as mini-dumps.  The main feeling I get is heart racing and feeling like it is beating my whole body.  Like my body is one whole heart beat.  I don't feel great but not nauseous, no sweating.  I think it lasted about 30 min.  Mine is definately sugar related and has only happened when I have been out and don't have a good guage of the sugar content in food.  Not that I should have eaten it to begin with but some stuff just has a lot more sugar than I expect.

Maybe we have different "dumping" experiences.  Maybe it affects us differently?

Only one way to be sure which it is...get a glucose meter and if it happens again, test! Anything under 70 is not good.

Bariatric surgeons are calling reactive hypoglycemia "late dumping" which is just wrong in my opinion.

It depends on how long after you ate that stuff you reacted. Dumping is when the sugar (and sometimes fat) floods into your intestines too fast. So it's immediate. Anything that's not immediate is reactive hypoglycema pretty much by definition.

How long was "a little while later"?  I was a notorious dumper in the early WLS days.  I had quite a few "mini dumps" but have had 2 "major" dumps.

Like Marie said - dumping is within minutes of eating the sugar.  RH is (for me) typically 1 1/2 hours after.  I also dumped on fat...

My mini dumps were when I was eating watermelon the first summer after surgery.  I'd get the "ugh I don't feel good" syndrome - with maybe a hot flash or two, it would pass.

The Major dumps put me in bed for 3 hours....

RH makes me hot flashy, shaky, a little disoriented, sometimes a little nauseous.   Dumping and RH often have similar symptoms - its the timing that tells you which it is.

I also liked I dumped.  I wasn't a sugar eater typically, but fat also made me dump.  Keeps you on the straight and narrow (for awhile anyway)

Your input is helpful. The feeling sick was probably within 10 minutes of when I stopped eating. I work in a hospital so I can easily get access to a glucometer so if it happens again I will have sugar level checked. The PA I work with wanted to check my blood pressure (I have had some issues with orthostatic hypotension at home since surgery). I gave the chocolate covered popcorn to my office mate and said "take this home PLEASE!".

I would say that all of those things right after the other probably caused you to have some Dumping symptoms.  The fat from peanuts and peanut butter plus the chocolate probably wasn't a good combination.

I'm so glad that I still dump!  I haven't had a big onej for awhile but it's common for me to have little ones and it makes me mad that I have such little control when it comes to sweets.  I know I have to limit fats like peanut butter and I check the sugar count on practically everything I eat.

Thanks Roz.....I did over do it. This is unusual for me but it is so hard sometimes to resist something at work. I try to be careful with peanut butter too as it adds up fast. I also think this was the first real chocolate I have had since surgery so just the drizzle on top of everything else was too much. Will just stick to my greek yogurt with some almonds if I need a little crunch.
