Transitioning
RNY on 06/01/12
So I am 3.5 weeks post op and transitioning to soft foods per my NUT what I am wondering is I know I am still suppose to be getting in 60g of protien are there a certain number of calories I am to be having in a day? If I exercise 4x per week(each session burning 3-400 cal) can you put your body into starvation mode if I do not consume enough calories? Any adivce would be greatly appreicated. Thanks.
Add protein to your soft food or keep drinking protein shakes to help with your fluids.
Calories are not what counts...and 60 grams is not enough protein once you get past 3 months (yes, that is what the NUT recommends but she is called a NUT for a reason. You may need as little as 100 grams or as much as 200 grams. That's why we advocate protein shakes. The rule of thumb is 30 grams of protein 1st month, 60 grams 2nd month and 90 grams by month 3....

The soft food you are adding will be mainly protein. Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cooked chicken, fish, etc. They will get you some protein but not anywhere near enough because you will be eating such a small amount, probably not more than 2oz or 1/4c. So shakes are still your best friend. At your point, we were eating 6-8 times a day between our shakes and food. Your body doesn't go into starvations because you are eating frequently and getting your protein.
I remember being so ready for each new phase. Just take it slowly, add one food at a time so if anything doesn't sit right, you know what it is. If something causes an issue, just wait a few weeks and try again.
