Good morning. We rock!
What do you do now that you didn't before you had your surgery and started hanging out here on the LW board?
I question medical professionals and their advice about nutrition, vitamins and weight loss. Now I know they don't get nutritional and vitamin training in medical or nursing school that will help us maintain optimal health. They get training on how to fix us when we break and that is when I will listen to them, but it's a trust but verify kind of thing for me now. I know that there is so much for docs and nurses to learn that they can't know everything, so I don't think badly of them, just aware that they're doing the best they can.
Next...
Ok, I guess I ticked everyone off. Sorry, forget mine, how have you changed?

I eat vegetables now and LOVE them. I order veggies instead of starches with my meal. If there are no veggies on the menu, I say "forget it". I NEVER would have done that prior to surgery, and veggies were "ok"... I wouldn't go out of my way to eat them.
I want to hit the Farmers market tomorrow morning and see about getting some "home grown" veggies. The post you made yesterday about growth hormones in meat really made me start thinking... I'm not sure if you had a chance to read that article I posted, but it also goes into veggies and pesticides - was really quite thought provoking. Sometimes the obvious things, aren't so obvious when it is ingrained into your way of life. I find it SO interesting the US allows growth hormones in raising of beef and poultry and other countries don't.... I also looked at the Paleo diet. Like you I can incorporate some, but not all of it at this time.
Oops - got sidetracked - but then this IS something I wouldn't have even considered in changing in my lifestyle pre-op.

In western medicine, its not about prevention, its about trying to fix whats broken. Especially since medical schools recieve alot of backing from pharmacuetical companies.
In nursing school, way back in the 80's, I had one semester on nutrition and it was all about the rda's and the governments thoughts on nutrition, which is the bare minimum. Not impressive at all.
Since then I have done much resear*****are of our patients with wounds, chronic illnesses and intolerances/allergies.
And since surgery, it has been a major education and much frustration with the mindset of my bariatrician. Bare minimums. Go figure. I would atleast have thought she would be more up to date.
27mg of iron is not enough.
Flinestones are a joke!
I still do need protein supplements.
Refined carbs are not my friend.
Dry d3 is the only way to go.
So big thanks to you and vitalady and all our other gurus and veterans that have paved the way for me.

I am still working out how I want to change. Treat myself every now and then not everyday. Move. I make sure I stay off my arse except for mini breaks. If I get to where I sit for too long the urge to grab something "illegal" for a DS'er comes along. I still want to bake something. Like right now there are the world's juiciest peaches on my counter. My family wants a peach cobbler. When it is done I know that I will have to leave the room or even the house when they eat it. I keep wanting to try almond flour for baking but I haven't found any. Waaaaaaaaaa!

I rarely drank liquids before surgery. It took me all week at work to drink a 20 oz. Diet Pepsi. By the end of the week it was warm and flat so most of the time I didn't even finish the whole bottle. Now I crave my Lemon Tea Protein and always have a glass of something close by.
I plan my meals and rarely just grab something to eat. Actually get my labs done and go to my PCP yearly.
I embarrass my girls running from the car into the stores...LOL.
I buy clothes just by holding them up and I don't worry that they won't fit because there are tons of chooses in smaller sizes.
I jump rope with my grandkids and last weekend I climbed a large rock (I still have to download the prictures).
I'm don't sit on the sidelines anymore....I'm not the picture taker either.
OK....have to stop or this might be pages long. I LOVE MY RNY!!!!!!!

God is walking with me every step of the way. Because of HIM this is possible!!
RNY 10/15/2008 9+ Years!!! Height: 4' 11" HW: 203 SW: 197 CW: 119 on Maintenance
This takes some thought because although my RNY made me much more mobile and active, then my knee took it all away and I am creeping my way back.
I plan when I am going to be away so I can eat thoughtfully instead of mindlessly.
I'm sure my nutritian is better than it has every been, even thought I ate pretty well before, just way more than I needed. I am more consciencious about what I eat and my vits and labs.
I try to not beat myself up when I slip up. Just get back on the wagon.
I try to be honest here, even if no where else about my journey.

I wish the NUTS would listen more to the ones of us that are successful and admit that maybe we do know what works for us since we are living this life.
I think that now I am living my life and not jus****ching my life go by. I love to run and have found my athletic part again that I had lost since high school. I actually feel younger than I have in years.
I'm like Roz - I could go on and on!!
