Good Morning. Read the labels even it's the same name and brand

Apparently all the label has to say is "new and improved" to cover their legal responsibilities to the public when they change the first ingredient in the nutritional table, whey protein isolate, to whey protein concentrate or some other milk related substance. This increases the carbs and calories per scoop, and reduces the bio availability of the protein. Maybe not by much, by normie standards, but enough to cause some of us malabsorbers intestinal distress. Our DS groups have long threads talking about trying to find new protein powders to replace Champion and IDS, etc. Apparently supply isn't able to keep up with demand. Why didn't they see this coming? Or did they, but chose to bury it on page 10? ...just a public service announcement to read your labels and know what you're buying and why.

Y'all have a great Saturday.

This is the first I have heard of this Gina so I appreciate it.
Do you always drink isolate instead of concentate whey? I go back and forth on this....especially since the concentrate keeps me full longer...

Have a great weekend! I am off to the gym...

I was using a blend for the same reason but whey protein isolate was always the first ingredient. Syntrax Nectar is still using isolate as the first ingredient so I switched from IDS vanilla-cinnamon (for protein coffee) to Nectar vanilla and add my own cinnamon and an extra Truvia packet for sweetness. So, technically Syntrax is a blend but still uses whey protein isolate as it's base. I believe Optimum Nutrition is the same way-- still uses isolate as a base but contains other stuff as secondary to be a blend.

Personally, I go by the number of grams of protein on the label vs. the number of carbs and fats. I don't worry about whey protein isolate vs. concentrate because they are both whey protein and thus have the same bioavailablity. The only difference is that concentrate hasn't got all the lactose removed so, if you are very lactose intolerant, it could trigger you and, as Gina said, there will be more carbs. Well, there could be more carbs. They could always take some other carby ingredient out to keep the carbs the same. It just depends.

I find the protein that are a blend -- my favorite has whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and soy protein isolate -- taste better. That's important too.

The new formulas (or at least Champion Nutrition) have less protein per scoop too. I forgot about that.

And that's a problem.

As is more carbs for the same (or less) protein.

sorry my previous post got cut off, my computer freaked out on me last night.

What I was trying to say - About 6 months ago when I read another post write the same thing about isolate doesnt cause lactose problems and I also asked my surgeon, my NUT and my gastroenterologist.  They all said they never heard of such a thing.  They said unless the isolate has lactaid in it, it cant get rid of it.  They all said they would love to see some proof.  I got an isolate and it was no different - still had horrendous diarhea and I made the shake 2 ways = once with lactaid milk brand and once with smart balance lactose free = none made a difference other than giving me more protein.   None of them worked - all gave me terrible diarhea within minutes.

So, I have stayed away from shakes for quite awhile.  I can now eat small amounts of dairy but not that and it must be with 4 lactaid pills.

I think the whey protein isolate has a less amount of lactose than casein and the new formulas contain more caseins.  Some people are terribly sensitive to any lactose, even the little bit in whey isolate, but most folks are ok with the little bit in the isolate. Also, the sugar alcohols can cause malabsorbers issues.

Here is the blog article I read that talks about whey protein concentrate vs. isolate:

http://livefluid.com/_blog/The_Official_Fluid_Blog/post/Whey_Protein_Isolate_vs_Whey_Protein_Concentrate_-_What's_the_Difference_Why_Should_I_Care/

Richard Smith is one of the founders of Fluid, which started out  making a recovery drink that his partner Dave created as part of his Master's Thesis in Nutritional Oncology. (Now they also make performance drinks.)

And just for grins, here's a blog post from him about whey vs. casein:
