2 Questions re: Calcium Injections and Tooth decay

I have learned from the dentist today that I have two cavities at the gum line.  Because they happened is a short period of time (6 months) and because she can see that my oral hygeine is great, she is blaming it on sugery beverages or stomach acid.  I don't drink sugery beverages so she is suggesting that I call my physician and up my Nexium to counter act the acid that is causing this.  Of course I was working to get off the Nexium due to calcium absorbtion issues.  I never used the Nexium before my sleeve but have to use it now.  When I mentioned this to the dentist she suggested Calcium injections.  I've never heard of that.

1. Has anyone else experienced quick tooth decay post surgery due to stomach acid and what have you done about it?

2. Has anyone had or heard of calcium injections?

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.  I also posted this a VSG maintence.  Sorry if it's a repeat.

I didn't have this problem, but I was taking Nexium before and after surgery.  I'm wondering if drinking less water could have something to do with it too.  A dry mouth can promote tooth decay.

Good point about the water.  I could be drinking more liquids.  I don't drink straigh****er but need some acid in it or I feel nauseas.   I could be drinking more.

I'm still on an acid reducer and was before surgery also.  Never heard of calcuim injections and haven't had any problems with decay.  Dr just reduced the amount of calcuim suppliments I am doing.

If it is acid, you can try sleeping on a wedge to keep the acid down.

Wait, reduced the amount of calcium?!?!?  Price, I'm really doubtful about the vitamin advice you're getting from them.

i was taking 630mg morning and evening and 500 in the middle of the day. only because I really was eating more of the caluicm chew than 500 during the day, I was getting more than that.  They wanted me to drop the middle of the day one.  What I did was half the ones morning and evening and keep the 500 in the middle of the day.  So I think I am still ok.
I'm thinking I will add back in some D3 but not sure if to add one 50,000 once a week or 2000 daily.  I have both.  Hate for that to get too low before they retest and see in July.

Can I ask you, why didt they cut your calcium?  Did your labs show your were taking too much?  I know your vitamin D was too high.  What was your calcium and PTH?

The recommended daily dose of calcium citrate is 1500-2000mg per day in 3 or 4 daily doses, so if you tend to like to eat the chewables during the day as a treat, just take the 500mg 4 times per day and dont use the 630mg at all.  Then you wont go over 2000mg per day.  There is a lot of controversy over if you can absorb more than 500mg at a time.  I never had a  problem with the 630mg and my NUT says 650mg at a time is fine but others say only 500mg at a time.

The best way to know to know if you arent getting enough calcium is to go by your PTH - if it is high, then you need more vitamin D and more calcium, if it is on the low side which is usually great but if too low, you are getting too much vitamin D;  If your PTH is high but your calcium is low, then you are taking too much calcium.  A PTH blood test is vital for us.

2,000 units of D is basically useless.  I would recommend taking 10,000 unts daily or 50,000 units daily which I think are both still too low but are a good place to start without continuing to plummet your ranges.

Calcuim was 10, on the high end of the range and it had been trending up.
PTH was low, 8.4, had been 20
They are retesting all of that plus D in July.  I took a 50000 D3 last week.  I just hate to get behind again.

No, here is the thing - when dealing with hyperparathyroid which is when they worry about high calcium levels, you also have a high PTH level not a low PTH level.   High calcium levels can be due to 2 things - either a tumor of the parathyroid glands which you dont have because you dont have a high PTH and the other cause is when you are leaking calcium from your bones and into your blood.  This makes your serum calcium very high in your case.

A low PTH can be due to a couple of things also - not taking enough calcium and taking too much vitamin D.  So, yes your vitamin D was high which probably lowered your D (20 was perfect) but when your level went to 120 (I think I remember you writing along with not enough calcium - it caused your PTH to go even lower.

You might want to get some labs done sooner to see what is happening - I know when I have major changes, my Endocrinologist will check things pretty quickly - like when I stopped the D totally she rechecked in 2 weeks to make sure it went down but to far down and then again in 6 weeks when I
went back on it but on a dose lower than before to make sure it stayed where we wanted and didtn go back up or even further down.  When dealing with large dose vitamins, things can happen really fast and waiting 3 months or some people 6 months between labs - can be very dangerous. I have heard people waiting a year and to me that is crazy.

If your PTH, D and calcium are still in the same area then you need to re=evaluate - send me the combination of the 3 labs, and I can try to help you  = it is tough to balance these.  You might want to see a good Endocrinoloigst for this stuff too.  I was being tested for this stuff for like 8 years before my RNY and it really helped.
