When I don't want to use skim milk for my shakes, I use unsweetened Almond milk, which is very low carb and doesn't have any sugar. It has about 40 calories. Tastes better than using water, at least to me.

just so you know, the sugar in regular milk is from the lactose - it isn't added sugar.   this is the same reason you cant get SF ice cream -you can get no sugar added but you will never find SF ice cream - the sugar comes from the lactose in the milk.

I do know that. Sometimes I don't want the extra carbs, but the protein content of skim milk is good.

Gail, did you know that the carb difference between whole milk and skim milk is all of ONE carb??? Skim has 12, whole has 13. Protein is the same for both...it's the fat content that is hugely different.

Just an FYI. :)

I was talking about unsweetened almond milk versus skim milk having less carbs. The other poster thought that I referring to the carbs coming from added sugar, which I wasn't thinking about. I know that the sugar in milk is from the lactose. I like unsweetened almond milk at times, when I want less calories and carbs. It is better than using water. Skim milk has a few more calories and carbs. Just depends upon the time of day that I am drinking the beverage.

I don't drink whole milk, but then again, I'm not a DS'er. :)

LOL...yeah, we DS'ers have to have fat.

Unsweetened Almond milk does have less carbs but also far less protein (1 gram vs the 8 grams of cow milk).

And actually I tend to use half and half or full heavy cream instead of milk...but when I do have milk, I use the whole kind. Always have, even pre-op. Just never got use to skim or low fat milk...to me, it all tasted like blue water. :)

Half and Half..................Yum, but alas, it isn't on my food plan.

I use the Almond milk, when I mix it with protein powder. Better than water.  Skim milk is for my lattes.

Vitalady is a roll model for me, too.  I can't even imagine being the same weight for one year, much less 18.  I do know how cunning, baffling and powerful my food addiction is.  I am using 12 step talk here.  We talk about our disease and how even though it may currently be arrested it is not gone.  It is still doing push ups and getting stronger, just waiting for me to slip up.  It will never go anywhere, I know that.  That is why I stay away from sugar and gluten every day, not just when my weight creeps up.  Because I know that once I let them back in I may never again be able to put them down again.  I don't do anything half way.  Well, anything unhealthy for me.
Tomorrow I get paid and I'm going to go the the community center and start my membership.  Other then riding my bike a little I have done nothing about exercising since my neck and head pain started.  I still have it but it's more tolerable now, or maybe I am just used to it.  I can't put my life on hold anymore because of the pain.  So tomorrow I will start exercising again.  The center is right down the street so I won't have any excuses.  They also have a nice pool so I can take water aerobics, too.

I started back on adding protein shakes in...making them with water not milk. (or cream). But getting them into the blender is a real issue now...seems the smell that never use to bother me does now. I'm pushing past it and doing it anyway but it's very hard. After talking with you on FB, Gina, I am now convinced that my jaw surgery has something to do with my inability to handle the smell.

I don't count anything right now, but with two double scoop shakes a day, I'm getting far more protein than I was.

I do know from being with Michelle and eating several meals with her that she uses food to get most of her vitamins in....not liquid.

And exercising at home is our method...got back to it yesterday after being told to not do any exercise except walk for two weeks after surgery (both of them). Discovered I am having stabbing pains in my joints...I have some small hand weights I use. So I need to figure out if it's just lack of use or something to worry about.
