The thing is, all these meds take time to build up in your blood stream to have a therapeutic effect. People are started on smaller doses and titrated up to a therapeutic level. It can take weeks to see results. It usually doesn't happen after a few doses or one week.

Topamax has it own set of side effects that can be troublesome for many people. Unfortunately, there isn't a perfect medication. The weight gain from gabapentin has been fast. Topamax can cause numbness and tingling, concentration and memory problems, increased risk of bladder infections and kidney stones. Seems to be dose related.

Gail, the problem with gabapentin is there is NOT a theraputic dose...you get relief then you get use to that dose and the symptoms return so they tritate the dose upward...so you find relief again, then you get use to that new dose and have to go up again. And this is very typical of the drug...it stops working at it's dose after a month or so and you have to go up to find relief again. My initial theraputic dose was 1800 mgs...by the time I came off it, I had tritated up to 4800 mgs and was headed higher but my new neuro decided to try something else.

You are right in that topamax has it's own set of issues...but then any med does. Some meds work for some and others work for others. I did not have the numbness/tingling issue or concentration memory issues with topamax. And I was on the highest dose possible...much higher than they typically give to migraine patients...mine was double that.

Migraines are evil...I have a friend who suffers one daily and can count on one hand how many migraine free days he has had since his car accident back in 1998. Most times he controls it enough to function but usually ends up in the hospital about once a month with the pain.

I haven't "played" in awhile, but I do weigh regularly. I used to range at 123-124#. These days I am a little more inclined to weigh 125-126#. Makes me nervous for sure, but I am within where I'd like to be, so we will see......
