Does anyone have any tips for breaking free from the evil grasp of the carb monster?  I mean, besides the obvious :)

Gotta go cold turkey. Tough it out for a few days and you'll be like new.

I continually fight the Carb monster - it is an addiction for me.  I agree with the cold turkey approach.  And - remove them from your kitchen!!

....now if you can help me take my own advice.....

So zero/super low carb or would you suggest doing shakes only?

What about complex or whole grains....NO?

Shakes are awesome and I'd cut the grains and fruits right now too. Try to stick with raw veggies or plain cooked green veggies for now.

Try the 5DPT - (5 day pouch test) - google it...

It does work - its not easy, but getting off carbs never is.  AND it gets you back in touch with your tool.

Good luck!  I need to do it too...

For me it means sugar free and gluten free.  No half measures.  I can't mess with a little bit, even whole grain, organic, natural, whatever.  For me it is like being an alcoholic (which I also am).  One is too many and a thousand isn't enough.  For me, I don't have a problem with carbs.  I can have carbs from dairy, from fruits and vegetables.  I just can't have the refined, processed carbs and I can't have anything with gluten.  I can occasionally have gluten free things like pasta.  They don't make me crave more.  But give me real pasta, even whole grain, and I am off to the races.
It's been over 21 months and I don't miss them and don't crave them.

I'm with Major Mom on this - no whole grains, very low fruit (preferably none, but sometimes I need the juiciness after a meal), just proteins and raw or steamed veggies. It takes me about 3 days to detox, and then I can add fruits back in. Grains - maybe once a week or I turn into the carb ***** again.
