Hello new to the Lightweights board
Like you I have lost weight over and over and over, but I could never keep the weight off. At 29 months post op, I have maintained my weight loss, with the exception of a small bounce back, for the first time since I was in my early 20s. That is what this surgery has done for me. I wish you the best in making this decision.
Annette, LOSING the weight is not the problem...keeping it off is. As you staated...is your husband overweight? If he isn't and hasn't tried to lose and keep it off, he won't totally understand the struggle, you need to help him see the problem.
How many diets have you been on in your lifetime? I've gained and lost weight since I was 12...I was always gonna be fat until I went into surgery. Yes, I can lose it but I can not keep it off. And when it came back, it brought friends.
What co-morbid conditions are you dealing with? I was a pump using insulin dependent type 2 diabetic, and on cholesterol meds.I now keep my diabetes under control with just diet and exercise. Pre-op my a1c was 8.2, last test was 5.9 AND ON NO MEDS!!! My cholesterol was genetic, always gonna be over 200 regardless of what I did. Now it's 179 and dropping. NO meds.
I was on 11 prescription medications pre-op. I am now on THREE. And two are my thyroid meds which I knew I would not get rid of.
The co-pay on that alone paid for my vitamins.
I'm also in better shape than ever before. And I don't formally exercise...except for walking. I get mine doing home renovations and yard work.
Just some thoughts for you.
Liz

To Liz: This sounds almost like my story. I don't have any comorbidities YET- but it was just a matter of time. Losing weight has been easy, but keeping it off, NOT. I started dieting and taking pills since age 12. I'm 35 now and still playing the same weight game. Now I finally decided I would get help and do something about it permanently.
Did your thyroid medication dose go up or down? I am on 300mcg Synthroid now, but the doctor says that when I lose weight it might come down. I have read on other diet forums where women lost a lot of weight (not with surgery, just diet) and had to lower their doses.
Like you, I don't formally exercise (right now). Taking care of home, baby, and my garden and landscaping keeps me very active and has been very beneficial in my pre-op weight loss phase.
To the original poster: My husband, father, brothers...they have not had a weight problem. They're all skinny and don't think I need the surgery and think I'm crazy for even considering it. Thank God I have my mom who has had a weight problem and can help me, support me, and understand WHY I need to do this. It's difficult doing this alone- I highly recommend getting SOMEBODY on board to help you post-op. You're gonna need support. I don't suggest hiding it from your hubby. Take this time now to help get him convinced!
Best of luck to all!

Welcome Annette! I had open RNY almost 3 weeks ago. I was an insulin-dependent type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, & depression. A few hours after the surgery my blood glucose was 127. My fasting blood glucose without insulin pre-surgery was 349. I am off the insulin per my doctors, & I check my blood glucose daily. It hovers around 145 without ANY meds. Before surgery, I started on insulin taking 20 units a day. Over almost 2 years on insulin, I topped out the week before surgery at 90 units a day.
I'm also off cholesterol & bp meds.
My husband - who is an engineer - was "sold" on the surgery because it could "cure" my diabetes. For him, as a scientist, it was a no-brainer. My husband went with me to the initial consultation with my surgeon, Dr. Anez. Before that visit, he was completely disengaged from all of my health problems. I didn't dwell on them with him. I didn't tell him when I was going to the doctor because he's just not programmed mentally to have that kind of stuff "register." It would just hurt me when he didn't ask me when he got home from work how the doctor went. But he went with me to the hospital pre-op 3 hour seminar, & that guy "got it."
Don't get me wrong: it's been a bumpy 3 weeks for my marriage (understatement; check my blog). But every day my husband comments on how "skinny" I'm getting. He's changing, which I NEVER thought was possible.
I am CURED of DIABETES! Miracles do happen.
Good luck & best wishes! xo GG
