Hello new to the Lightweights board

Hello, I've just recently discovered this light weight board and think I've found a good home!  I'm right about at the point to get scheudled for my surgery of choice DS with Paul Kemmeter at St. Mary's in Grand Rapds MI.  My issue I've been on a vitamin D hold for a month and in this time my husband has asked my not to have the surgery.  I agreed I'd try to lose the weight on my own again.  He has been wonderful in buying all the product that my Barartic center uses and cooking the dinners with 3 ozs lean meat and 2 servings of vegies and he is also eating this way.  I've also started strengh training and cardo and in the past month have lost 14 lbs.  Now my surgeon Paul Kemmeter told me to lose weight before the surgery and to so strengh training to help me in my recovery and that muscle helps lose weight faster.  So now I think I'm in the right place to have a surgery and am changing my mind about not having the surgery.  I haven't told any of this to my husband yet who is thrilled with my progress and makes statements like aren't I glad I'm not having the surgery because I can do it myself.  Well I know I can do it as I have many times over years it's just about maintining it.  Also when I'm in this mode it's like I'm obsessed with weight and I'm basically just eating very small dinners and living on these barartic shakes.  I want to not thnk about the food all the time and eat more normal and live normal and be fit!  I know and will make the commitment to the water, protein and vitamines that DS requires but I have to think that is better than this up and down business.  Sorry to go on so much.  I'm just in quite a state over what to do.  I feel people on this forum will understand more.  I'm heavy enough to qualify for WLS (BMI 40.6)  but since I'm not super super large everyone thinks I don't need it.

I'm seriously thinking about should I go ahead with the surgery or not and praying about it and then praying about how to talk to my husband about this.

Thanks all for reading and any comments that may be helpful.

Welcome to the LW's!
I know how you feel. Alot of people around me felt the same way. I wasnt big enough, but I sure was unhealthy and 100 pounds over weight.
Keep posting and keep things honest with your hubby. I am thankful that my hubby was very supportive.

Kemmeter is one of the best. I wish you all the best with your decision and your hubby. The DS will level the playing field and you'll be able to maintain like a normal thin person. You gotta get that weight off first though and doing it the hard way may not be the smart way, especially for women with our screwed up hormones and metabolisms.

Welcome aboard!

Hi Annette and welcome to the LWboard.

many of us have had that "you aren't heavy enough"  and "you can do it on your own".  Yeah, most of us have, over and over.  I was thrilled to have a supportive hubby who knew I had tried, over and over.  He appreciates my health improvement and new looks, even after 40 yrs together.

Show your hubby the long term stats on keeping the weight off without surgery.  I'm sure he is just concerned about you and scared but it is really hard to do it on your own.

May I ask why you're considering the DS if you're a "lightweight" ?  Are you having issues with Vitamin D before surgery?  I didn't understand exactly.

I have had issues with anemia and I'm hypothyroid, etc... so I am choosing VSG to avoid the absorption problems.  My family didn't want me to do it and didn't think I was heavy enough as well.  They were very worried about all the malnutrition/malabsorption problems- then I assured them that it's not as bad with VSG and they are more supportive.

Several of us are DS LW's here...we all chose it for different reasons. My vit D was in the toilet pre-op and had been for several years...going on Vitalady's regime changed that. My Vitamin D was 130 last time I was tested. :)

I just was curious.  I read in the informational section on this site that DS was usually used on higher BMI's and had the most malabsorption.  So I figured if Vitamin D was an issue, maybe RNY or VSG might be an option?  Also thought maybe her husband would be less worried with another procedure?  I know that people who get the DS also get their stomachs sleeved and for some, they would rather just get the whole thing done.  I'm sure everyone has their reasons.  I had a friend get her RNY years ago and in addition made them put a band on her, which she still has, so she doesn't gain any weight.  She even asked for open surgery instead of laproscopic because she felt safer with the physician seeing everything with his own eyes LOL
I wasn't judging.  Just curious, more than anything.

What is Vitalady's regime?

Annette, welcome to the LW Board.

Have you taken your husband to a support meeting or the information meeting that the surgeon conducts?  I took mine and he got to talk to people who had had the type of surgery I was having.  The doctor explained the types of surgery he performed.  He went with me to my consultation and got to talk one on one with the surgeon and that helped to relieve some of his fears.  Mostly he was afraid something would happen to me - I bet your husband is worried about you also.

Just talk to him about it.  It is much easier if you have support at home.

Good luck and be sure to keep us updated on your progress.

You need to get your husband on board as soon as possible. Let him know that you need an extra tool in your arsenal to keep the weight off. The surgery levels the playing field and makes it possible to lead a more normal life. Go for the surgery. I don't regret it for a single second!

Hugs,

Liz
