My Sugery Update

So things did not go according to plan.  I had my RNY done on 2/29 and was home 3/1.  All of a sudden, I woke up with addominal pain and a 101.4 degree fever on 3/6.  I immediately called my surgeon who had me come into the office right away.  He had labs and abdominal x-ray ready for me when I got there, but the minute he saw my face on the elevator he decided to check me out right then.  He changed his orders to a CAT Scan w/ contrast immediately and started making phone calls to have me re-admitted to the hospital.  The results of the CAT Scan were not good.  Somehow I managed to dislogged a staple in my stomach and the acid was eating away at it causing a tear.  It meant emergency surgery to correct the problem.  So I've been back in the hospital for the last 4 days - 2 of which in ICU.  I'm feeling better, but I'm very weak.  Please pray for me.  I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life.  I don't think I've ever seen my family, including my dad, so scared in my life (yes, I went ahead and told him the day before the original surgery).  Anyway, back to get some rest.

OMG - how awful!  I'm glad you're doing better - but in your dads' case, please remind him that something can happey with ANY surgery...

I'm so glad your Dr was proactive and saw you immediately - so many of them want to "wait and see"...

Get your rest and God speed your recovery.

You know the funny thing?  He was rather accepting of me having surgery.  He's hoping for the best.  But I had never seen that fear in his eyes as when I was laying in ICU.  It brought tears to my eyes (and that bought of buyer's remorse).

Thanks, Jennifer.  I'm glad I've got my entire family in my corner right now - even if the patriarch is making me constantly check my temp now.

Oh dear Rika, sending you hugs and love from Australia.  I'm so glad for you that your doctor was so swift at getting to the source of the problem.  I was ICU last year even before my surgey and it is a very scary thing to go through for both yourself and your family.  You will move on and up from this ow I'm sure.  Baby steps each day and hope that you recover quickly.

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

I'm glad they found your leak and got it fixed.  I had a friend who spent 2 weeks in ICU with leak issues before they got her all patched up.  The good news is that she ended up with a great recovery after that and has lost all her weight and is doing wonderfully.  Look to the goal and you will get there.  Get your rest and follow Drs orders and know we are here to support you.
