Yes I am doing bad carbs so bad it's like an addiction.  I seem to be back on thspiral downhill and gaining at a rapid rate.  I got up this morning and had a protein shake which I haven't had in quite awhile.  I've packed up a few of them for when I'm at work and ill give it a good try today and take it step by step.

Thankyou all of you  I new you guys would have great suggestions. Maybe I do need to drink more and always have something in my mouth.

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

Karin,
Carbs are an addiction. I.too,am that badly addicted. If I ever start eating them one is too many and 10,000 is not enough. I have to  work an abstinance program where they are concerned. I have 2 months and 1 week of abstaining from recreational carbs.

The withdrawal symptoms of coming off carbs/sugar are just like those for coming off cocaine,it is that serious.

Please know That I say this with all kindness and sympathy, but since this is yoursecond or third WLS,I don't think any WLS is going to give you the results you desire as long as you are addicted to carbs/sugar.

It is hard,VERY HARD,detoxing from carbs but it can be done if you have your mind made up. Personally,I can't stand the thought of being addicted to anything. Not cigs, not alcohol, not sex,not gambling, not shopping, not food. I just will not go there anymore. I tell myself ,what would you do if it was drugs? You wouldn't just go on along with it would you? NO. I can't and won't. Some of us can't eat just one,not today and not ever. Sounds like you may be one of those too.

I wish you the very best in this struggle,
Holly

Oh Holly,  I sit here feeling so raw and honest as you have hit the nail on the head exactly.  Eating the carbs to me is a bit like being "a little bit pregnant" where even the slightest of carbs that crosses my path I just have to eat.  And yes this is my third surgery after two lap bands with major complications and yet here I stand still feeling a failure. :(

Ive had another bad day with the carbs while both at work and at home.  I really need to get my **** together and just take stock of my entire life path.  I saw the local doctor the other week and he put me on some anti depressants as my life is feeling so out of control.  The problem is they are making me so tired and in the mornings I have the shakes in my hands so I need to go back and see him to get them changed I think.  I don't think they are supposed to do this to me and I still feel as down as ever so they certainly aren't lifting my spirits up at all.

I have four days off work now so I really need to work hard at de-carving my life and perhaps like you said they are the same as drugs to me so maybe I need to practice total abstinence as well.

Thank you so much to all of you who have posted replies, I feel loved by you all.

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

You are not alone in carb sensitivity, and there is a BIOLOGICAL REASON we tend to reach for carbs during stress, our bodies are not stupid, carbs change our body chemistry.  Its not you being good or bad, its just how you are wired up.  No point in attaching emotions or judgements to a body function, girlie.

Here is what I wanted to say about your tiredness - are you able to take the meds at night before bed?  This might be helpful (especially during the introductory period with some medications that make you sleepy only until your body adjusts).

There are things for me I just cannot have here at home, and like some folks with drugs, I do dabble in the trigger foods recreationally, but I have to have a structure about when (special times only) and where (not in my home unless its a function, and then after function is over, they are all destroyed).  This helps me because I can have them occasionally and KNOW I will white knuckle want them for a few days, but its not in my daily habit to have them - this makes it easier for me.

But there are times that I even have to be abstinent of things that other times are not triggery for me (nut butters).  When I feel "usey" and/or find myself negotiating about the terms I have instituted about a food, then it needs to have caustic material dumped on it and put out in the big bin.

You are not alone girlie.

Do see if you can take your medications at night and if that might be helpful to you.  Take care of you.

ETA - this about your medications too, some medications need a full couple of weeks before there is enough in your system for you to actually feel the results, and most of them will not actually "lift" your spirits, just make it so you can be less emotional/less raw than previously.

You rawness and honesty feelings have brought me to tears, for I know those feelings so well. Antidepressants can be good and I agree with Brandilyn's post to try them at night. It does take several weeks for them to get in your system and what you should notice is an ability to cope better emotionally, not really and lift,as brndilyn also says.

the hand shaking
, the tiredness, etc are prob not the antidepressants, but the other"drug" in your system. As you detox off  of carbs, you will likely feel a lot of hand shaking and extreme  tiredness, cause your body continually is calling for carbs to keep that quick energy up. You likely haven't had carbs in the night,so your body is desperate for that quick fix in the morning. The quick energy is gone just as fast, causing an insulin spike with no food left to process(carbs go into your blood stream super quick,as soon as they hit your mouth) so the insulin causes you to store MORE fat causing weight gain. As long as there is quick energy available for your body to use(carbs) your body will not burn any stored fat.

Doing it while you have time off is a great idea. Have you told this to your DH/family? That you are going to do this and need their help? You need to clean out all the carby stuff at home, not much you can do about work, but home you can. You need your family's support starting today.

Make sure you have MANY choices of things to eat that are not carby and are on plan. If you have to eat some of that every 2 min,do it. Eat whatever you can to keep you from turning to the carbs. Lots of protein will help and lots of fluid. Especially eat a protein rich bedtime snack so you body has something to work on over night. Also, watch protein bars that can be very carby and often use sugar alcohols which affect me the same as sugar. Look out for too many carbs in protein shakes too,if you use them.

Karin, you may not have e a successful day right away. It is not easy. But counseling can help,as can AA and NA. We will support you in every way we can, don't stay away because of shame. There is no shame here, most of us know from one degree to another about addictions  and what helps us stay away from those triggers.

In closing, ever seen a pic of a drug addict with a needle hanging out of their arm and a total look of ecstasy on their face? I have and I have felt myself do that same thing, sigh with complete ecstasy when carb**** my mouth. That image of me being so excited over SUGAR,scares the hell out of me. It makes me the same as the junkie laying around somewhere with a needle hanging out their arm . I know carb addiction is a "silent" addiction in that we can still function while"using". Maybe that person with the needle hanging out their arm used to be a functional user too.

I don't want to be a junkie, and by the grace and mercy of God,maybe I won't be and maybe you won't be either.

Stay around we really, really care. I sincerely mean that.
xoxo
holly
