Vertically Challenged
Is it just my imagination or does it seem that for those of us that are veritically challenged the BMI does not seem to be as accurate as it is for taller people? I have noticed based on my size (2x) and percentage of body fat (per my scale 48%) does not appear to be reflected in my BMI of 37.2. I have seen taller people with similar sizes and body fat perecentage have BMI's over 40.
Just curious if anyone else thinks this or is it just me.

BMI doesn't take into account muscle or fat mass. Most scales that measure body fat really aren't that accurate. Bod Pod, hydrostatic weighing, or a Dexa scan are more accurate ways to measure body fat and muscle mass. People could have the same BMI, but drastically different lean muscle mass to fat ratios. BMI is soley based upon weight in relation to height, which is why it isn't always the most reliable way to measure appropriate weight.
Thank you loverofcats! Since this is a big determining factor for insurance coverage I was curious... I know I have a small bone structure and was wondering if there is a way for me to demonstrate this for insurance - perhaps I will ask the doctor about those other measures would help with my insurance company. Thanks again!
