Welcome to our LW Board!

I LOVE Sugar and Carbs!!!   At 3 1/2 years out my tool still takes control when I eat too much sugar and I'm so HAPPY about that!  Last week was my DH's birthday and I was determined I was going to have only a couple bites of the from scratch chocolate cake I made him and I totally lost control but my RNY brought me back  to my senses!!

I know it's a hard decision but part of your descion should be based on what kind of eater you are like Gina posted.

I was a volume eater and loved my carbs! Chose the sleeve because it is low maintenance (fewer daily vitamin and mineral supplements) and has reduced ghrelin production. It works by restriction rather than malabsortion.

Regardless of the surgery you choose, this is a life altering event. To be successful, you will be changing the way you eat forever to maintain your loss. The surgery and losing phases will not last forever. I wanted a drama-free way to live at a healthy and normal weight for me.

There is so much support and information here - best wishes on your decision.

Your bff's logic is actually illogical.

First 90 pounds is a lot. (Plus, is that to get to a normal BMI or above that? Because lightweights are statistically more likely to get to a normal BMI which means you may lose more than 90 pounds.)

Second, what does the amount of weight have to do with it? You need to pick your surgery based on your eating issues, what lifestyle changes you can live with and their various stats.

As for stats, the lapband is the least effective surgery and has the worst long-term complication rate.

As for drastic, if you had a tumor, you'd have it removed. Well, your stomach is broken --  it makes too much ghrelin -- so removing the part that makes ghrelin makes sense. Plus, implanting a piece of plastic in your body and cinching it tightly across your stomach seems pretty drastic to me.

The reality is that all WLS is drastic in some ways. It's surgery! It changes your life permanently! You need to accept that.

I was going to get a lapband and was thinking that the sleeve was too permanent, myself. Until I came to realize all the things I said above about my broken stomach and all WLS being permanent and stuff like that. Plus, I was hanging out on a Lapband board waiting for my surgery date and I saw way too many people work their bands, follow all the rules, and still have problems. A lot of the people I met around that time are now revising their surgeries and getting sleeves and RnYs because their bands stopped working for them.

I'm so glad I was able to see what life with a band was like before I got one! I'm so happy I got the sleeve instead and it's been a wonderful experience.
