Good Morning. I don't care what your NUT says....

They say insanity is doing the same things over and over again but expecting different results.  I guess that makes me insane because I will keep posting that continuous use of sugar and simple carbs will sabotage your initial weight loss and jeopardize successful maintenance.

You just jumped through all kinds of insurance hoops or paid through the nose for your WLS--why trample all over it? Your NUT most likely hasn't had to lose 100 pounds or struggle to keep it off long term, so there's no experience factor. She rarely, if ever, sees her WLS patients after about 3 years--she doesn't even know if her rules work! If your NUT is honestly assessing your journey and letting you lead with what works for you. Hold on to that NUT because you have landed a gold mine.

What's your decision? Follow the NUT or do what works?

 Gina,

Personally I use "Trust but Verify" with my NUT.

In fact, I spoke with my NUT yesterday regarding my 12 month labs.  She said everything was great!!!

Gina, I emailed you a copy of my 12 month labs.  I plan on following the recommendations you gave me.

Thank goodness my NUT respects that I do still have trigger foods. She does not bat an eyelash when we discuss low carb or that I have usually 2 protien drinks a day still.
Not to say that she does still recommend carbs, whole grains preferrable, but maybe not everyone is like me.
Carbs = cravings! Even too much fruit without protein can get me going and get me grazing during the day.

So keep on preaching Gina! I think its a message that deserves repeating over and over again.

Heh...my NUT told me to start my vitamin suppliments 2 weeks after surgery...needless to say I sit here now posting to you while drinking an Celebrate ENS my first full day home from the hospital.    :)
I also told my NUT,  my trigger foods are the usual carby things like bread, rice, potatoes and such...and I will avoid them to the end.  She is okay with that, and if she wasn't she would still have to be okay with it.

I have only seen my NUT 2 or 3 times, just to learn what I needed to eat in the beginning months.  And she never said anything that I found outrageous.  It's just that my insurance didn't pay for my visits so I had to research on my own and use my own common sense when it came to what I needed to eat to reach the goals and wanted and to stay there.
My biggest asset is my past experience, both before I ever had WLS and after my failure of my first surgery.  I examined what it was that caused me to become morbidly obese and what I did to regain all the weight I lost after my first WLS.  And I don't do it any more.
I really have to bite my tongue when I see new post ops asking when they can eat things like bread and cereal and pizza again.  Maybe they can eat those things in moderation.  Experience tells me that I can't and I haven't seen too many that can in the long term.  Experience shows me that whenever I see a person come back after 4 or 5 years asking about how to get back on track that what got them off track to begin with was eating sugar and refined carbs.  I have never seen anyone come back and say they need help because they are eating too much protein.
I am the only one that has to live with the way I choose to eat so I had to find something that was doable and livable.  I also have to be flexible and be able to make changes when something isn't working or if I just find myself bored and wanting to change things up a bit.  It is always evolving for me.  I certainly don't eat the way I did 6 months ago and I will probably be eating differently 6 months from now.  Hopefully what won't change is my commitment to not eat refined carbs and things that I know are triggers for me.  So far it's been 17 months, one day at a time.

Both the NUTs my practice uses are pretty good. I really miss the first one though. (She ran off to Paris with her boyfriend, lucky *****!)

But I have seen some whoppers out there in online-WLS land...

The year before my revision I saw a nutritionist for diabetic education then saw a nutritionist when I was planning a RNY to RNY revision. I got so confused because they were giving me the exactly opposite advice.

I had a telephone nutritionist session prior to my DS which was totally unhelpful.

I follow the advice of the vets here and what works for me.

Gina,

I'm so glad you posted this. This month has been so hard with all the holiday activities. Im getting my protein, but eating carbs (bad ones) too once in a while.

Thanks for repeating this!

I like doing the same thing over and over again.  I am a creature of habit and do much better when I follow a routine.

Wow the carbs and sugar can get to me pretty quickly.  I am really watching them closely now and trying to stay away from the bad carbs and most sugar.  I got all caught up in the cookies!!

I like my NUT, she is a sweet girl, BUT I'm pretty sure she has never ever had a weight problem.  She says that protein drinks are empty calories-haha so are sugar cookies!!  I pretty much ignore that because every time I've tried to go without my protein drinks, I eat so much more junk.  I actually love my protein drinks.  Maintenance is hard enough, I think we all have to find our own way and what works for us.

I think anyone who can say with a straight face that protein drinks are empty calories has no credibility as a nutritionist.
