Taking meds after surgery
I have a question about taking medications. I have five medications that I have to take. The nurse I spoke to said to speak with my doctors regarding crushing or breaking them down to put into applesauce or liquids. When I spoke with one of the ones that oversees a couple of them, he said that I can crush them (even though the bottle says not to), but that I should be prepared to have an upset stomach. (??)
Did anyone else have this situation? Where a doctor told you to crush the pills and expect an upset stomach--while you were recovering from WLS? And if so, how did that go? Did the nausea meds help that in the long run?
Hmmm....just curious what to expect.
Thanks!

I would call your pharmacy and see if any of your meds are available in liquid form. And ask your pharmacist why the medications cannot be crushed-and ask if there are any comparable substitutions to what you are currently taking. Then, share that info with your doctor.
You should not crush or take any med that is extended release, sometimes it has a ER or XR after the name of the med or take anything with an enteric coating. If you take something in a capsule, you need to empty the capsure in apple sauce or something-the capsule won't break down well. My surgeon told me I could swallow any pill that was the size of a m&m or smaller, a couple of mine are bigger, so I cut them in half and I take my pills over an hour or so. I took a medication for depression that was extended release and I had it switched prior to surgery and took it for a month or so beforehand to make sure it worked as well.
I tried crushing my pills and mixing them in a bit of applesauce, it was a no-go for me. It was such a bitter, heinous, mixture, I gagged and almost vomited, and I have not thrown up once since having surgery,.
I hope this helps...good luck!

It seems like the surgeon had mentioned a long time ago that it wouldn't be a problem; then afterwards it became an issue when the other staff started telling me otherwise.
I'm sure the day of surgery, when I am in the hospital, they will have some of that all worked out. Then I will be able to go home and continue with the same program.
I feel more at ease now about just going forward with my meds as is.
Thanks everyone!!
