Great news and some questions too
Well went back to my surgeon this past Monday for my 6 week follow-up. Great news is im about 6 weeks ahead of schedule with eating and exercising
Best news is I am no longer on my diabetic meds :-) and my sugars are still testing in the 80's and 90's after being off Actos now 4 days and since that med only has a 24 hr shelf life in the body that means im doing good.
Now for the findings and questions. When they were inside me trying to do DS surgery they found that I had a congenitial birth defect, only 2% of the population has this and its called a Merckel Diverticulitis. So while they were inside they took it out and put my small intestine back to my large intestine.
The next problems they had was that no only did I have way more internal fat than they expected from a 241lb surgery weight guy, but this fat was very dense, very hard and every time they tried to lift or move my intestines it was so fragile it would break and also break the blood vessels.
The report said that pressure and cauterizing would not stop the bleeding and they had to stitch each vessel that broke.
He also said the doudenal was plastered solid in place and it has to be totally disected to get it to move where normally they just lift it up to see if it reaches mine was not able to do that.
The surgeon told me that after 5 1/2 hrs even though he had finally gotten everything in place he did not complete the Sleeve to DS cause he was very concerened about all the tramua my body had gone though and rightly so.
So I asked the Dr was with all the hard brittle fat??? He said some do and some don't but most don't.
I tried to find stuff on the web all week about it cause if its so fragile that touching it caused it to break and bleed do I have other things in life to worry about like any type of abdominal trauma from say doing martial arts, boxing etc?? I don't do any of those anymore but I think you know where im going with this??
Anyone know anything about this or have a simular situation??

Have you gotten your own copy of the doctor's report for the surgery? Without proper medicinal terminology for brittle abdominal fat there's nothing coming up that is useful info. I think you already found this out. Find out what the true name for the condition is and we'll all google it and learn.
So glad to hear about your sugar #'s being in the normal range now. That's a phenomenal success all its own!

Patient had significant amount of intraabdominal fat. While trying to to dissect the doudenum free the fat actually just pulled away from the tissue rather than allowing for dissection and was quite friable .
I remember it was the Dr telling me it was dense and friable and just kept breaking and bleeding but what I wrote above is right out of the report.
Friable = brittle and it seems to refer to fat cells as well as any other tissue they might be handling. Tissue degeneration as it relates to diseases of the liver is mentioned, but I'm not finding anything yet that says why the abdominal fat would have become friable. Nor is there anything yet indicating it can be reversed. Too bad they couldn't just do a lipo and get it out of the way! lol I'm going to assume it will go away as the weight (fat) loss continues. Have they said that's what they are waiting for so they can complete the surgery as planned? You look like you're losing at a great pace already though, so are you good with it as is Tony?
Knock Knock! Anybody else out there run across brittle abdominal fat before??
Ruthie

Tony, isn't a fantastic feeling to be off diabetes medications??? I know I was about 6-8 weeks out when I finally stopped all diabetes medications as well.
I googled your issue...sounds like just what Ruthie found out...mostly in relation to the liver.

Wow, I don't know anything about brittle fat but I understand your concerns. Wonder what will happen as it gets skinny?
You are doing great and have kept such a great attitude even though you didn't end up with what you thought you were going to. Keep it up and you will be to goal before you can think about the rest of the op to have a DS.
