Went in for kidney stone surgery - ended up septic and there for 8 days
Well, I went into the local hospital on October 19th for what I thought was a routine kidney stone surgery = going up with a scope, blasting the stones and inserting a stent. Well, I never got that far. I went to the outpatient surgery department, got undressed and into the gown. The nurse came in and took my BP and temp = that is when all the **** hit the fan. I had 102.7 temp and had no idea. I felt fine. So, the surgery was cancelled. They ordered blood cultures and urine cultures and I was admitted to the hospital. Getting an IV started wasn't easy but they finally got it.
My urologist came in and asked me about a CT scan I had had the week prior in NYC at my WLS surgeon hospital to check for a bowel obstruction or any other problems (there was a questionable area on previous CT scan of my kidneys that had no constrast) so they needed to be sure but the area that was in question has resolved and my surgeon (original surgeons partner) told me the scan was okay - nothing surgical and I could discuss it further at my 3 year appt with my original surgeon in November.
So, the urologist was upset that she never got a copy of the CT scan since she spoke to the surgeon the week before about schedule it around my kidney stone surgery and how would constrast would affect my kidneys. Well, what the surgeon failed to tell anyone is that the CT scan showed is that one of my kidney stones decided to try to pass and got lodged in the ureter and was now blocked. Making it an emergency and 1 week had already passed since the scan. Thankfully, she called the hospital for the report and she was pissed. Even though I had a high fever, I still had to be rushed into surgery because without a stent being inserted my entire urinary system could have shut down, my kidney function had already been severely compromised. I made it through that surgery.
They put me on IV antibiotics - 2 very strong ones until the cultures came back and sure enough - I had a blood infection and urinary infection. The weird part is 5 days prior, I had a urine culture and it was negative. So, here I was walking around septic and didnt' even know it, Thank goodness I went into the hospital for the surgery or who knows what would have happened.
I was there for 8 days, after 3 days the cultures came back and they were able to put me on the correct antibiotic - Cipro IV and now that I am home, I am on cipro by mouth for 2weeks until I go back next Wednesday to have the procedure Iwas supposed to have.
now I am so scared of running fevers, that I take it 2 times per day just to make sure. I am sure while on antibiotics I am fine but afterwards, I will keep taking it for awhile. It is really scary to think what could have happened.

Hi Rbb,
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I can't believe what you've been through! I feel so bad! So glad to hear that you're finally home and on appropriate antibiotics. I don't blame you for being scared and taking your temp a lot. I hope you're feeling better each day and your procedure on Wednesday goes well!

Dear Randy, how the heck were you walking around? I'm so glad you had that procedure scheduled because your body certainly wasn't giving you the clues that something was drastically wrong. I'd be taking my temp 2x a day as well.
You've had such a tough couple of years. You hang in there and take every challenge as it comes. I am really hoping that your health turns around and that you can enjoy life again.
Please keep us posted on how you're doing. I always get worried when I don't see you posting for long periods of time!
Good luck with the next procedure.
