Good Morning. Ugh! I hate the main board
www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4466464/Any-DSers-who-wish-t hey-had-gotten-the-RNY/
Is this what all RNYrs think of all DSrs? I doubt it, so let's stop generalizing, shall we? Unless you're an RNYr that lives with and DSr or a DSr that lives with and RNYr, you have no clue and no medical or nutritional science to back your assertions up. And besides, with altered insides that malabsorb, all bets are off anyway. Stop making crap up.

I think she had a right to hear ALL the possible ramifications and about all the possible negatives . That doesnt mean they will happen to her ... im sure she KNOWS that ...
I just don't believe in keeping people in the dark when theyre asking for specific information.
My personal opinion about the DS is that its an excellent surgery for those who are exceptionally well informed and mature enough and ready and willing ( and financially ABLE ) to stay vitamin- compliant forever . Not everyone who gets WLS has those necessary qualities by a LONG shot though...
I do suspect DSers have slightly more gas issues because somehow their shortened alimentary canal reacts badly to carbs or sugars maybe ? This is just based on anecdotal evidence from friends ...and the fact that despite my supposedly gas- producing diet ( beans and more beans ! ) after an RNY I basically have none .. or smelly poo either .
This may also have to do with eating animal products ... after all the poo of predator animals ( who have naturally shortened alimentary canals in order to be able to run faster and CATCH their lunch ) is VERY smelly .
In any case I certainly wasn't meaning to be insulting to anyone or to offend anyone .

according to some i should be in a hypoglycemic comma half the day lol and regaining like gangbusters ...
I DO have a lot of freinds with various surgeries .. and some are no longer alive . I cant help but wonder wether if theyd done things differently wether theyd still be here .
I DO think there are risks associated with each surgery and we have to do some real soul searching regarding what life we want to live post op .. where our limitations and probable weaknesses will lie long term before we make the all imporant decision regarding which WLS we want .
I definitely had a unique situation and a worst case scenario, a perfect storm of non compliance and inadequate follow up. At first I thought I was too blame, and of course I was to a large extent but as time as gone on I can see how the lack of education and follow up added to my problems. For a while I felt that the DS was a very dangerous surgery because of my experience but I can see how the biggest danger was not being as knowledgeable about what I was doing to myself and how to take care of my special needs. Had I known then what I know now, and had good information and advice from the beginning, things would have been very different.
I do want to address the issues about gas, diarrhea and odors. At the time I had my surgery I was told to expect those issues so I thought they were normal. I thought everyone who had the DS got bacterial overgrowth since it was very common among others I knew with the DS. Maybe it was the way the surgery was done at that time or at OHSU, since many of the people I knew also had their surgery done there. And the fact that at that time it seemed like we all ate refined carbs a lot more freely. At the time I didn't know that eating refined carbs and sugars would feed the bacteria and make it worse. I only knew one person who had a DS who had constipation and I remember being surprised to hear that.
Since I had my revision to lengthen my common channel I no longer have any issues with gas or diarrhea. My stools and gas smell like they always did before surgery. Like I said, maybe my common channel was too short for the length of my intestines or even measured incorrectly or in some way done that promoted the bacterial overgrowth. Now that the bacterial overgrowth is gone so are my bathroom issues. In fact, I take Miralax daily to prevent constipation problems. I know I am still malabsorbing because I can eat a lot of calories and still struggle to keep my weight above 100 lbs so malabsorption doesn't always lead to diarrhea and odor problems. The fact that I don't eat refined carbs probably helps a lot, too.
Ms Batt is the best. I wish some others were as sensitive as she is. She (and of course our Major Mom) are probably some of the best ambassadors of the DS. In AA we talk about attraction rather then promotion. They (and many other successful post ops) make the DS look like a very attractive option.
WLS 10/28/2002 Revision 7/23/2010

I only go on the main board occassionally when I have absolutely nothing to do and want a good laugh. I have never posted there and will probably never post there.
I think we should all respect each other for our very personal choices. I love that about our LW board.
