What I would do for a family that didn't notice!  I hope your DIL has success.  I had a friend who adopted when she couldn't get pregnant (she had PCOS).  Then they put her on Metformin because it is supposed to help with that and she finally got pregnant.  Then she had RNY. :)
Have a happy holiday Tazz.

I heard a good retort at last month's support group, and my mom seems to go with it OK.  It is:

"I'm under a doctor's close supervision for weight loss.  My weight and overall health are monitored every 3-6 months, and the doctor wants me to continue to lose weight"  I've used that, and I don't get any push back.

Isn't it funny how if you mention a doctor everyone shuts up? Like we think they are gods!  I'm glad that comment works for you.  I haven't even figured out what I will say but I'm sure there will be a few chances to say something

My replies to your example questions:

"You are looking too thin, you need to eat more"
***** But my doctor is happy with my health and I'm feeling GREAT!  Thank you for noticing!

"I thought you were on a diet"
*****  Dieting doesn't mean I've stopped eating altogether!  It's all good in moderation!  Thanks for noticing!

"You look wonderful.  How much have you lost?
***** I'm not sure why you ask that question but, I must have lost enough that you can tell a difference!  Thank you for noticing!!

Are you SUPPOSED to be eating that?
***** I'm not sure why you are asking but, I can eat whatever I choose, in moderation, can't YOU???

and in addition, "How are you losing your weight?" (by a busybody.)
***** By eating right and exercising.  Thanks for noticing.

in addition, "How are you losing your weight?" (by a person who is obese themselves.)
***** I'm eating right with the help of a weight loss surgical tool and exercising some every day... email me if you have any more questions and Thanks for Noticing!

also... "No, I believe I'll pass on that right now, but thanks for the offer!)

Happy Holidays!!

I think the 'thanks for noticing' is a good idea.  It acknowledges the speaker, without getting into further discussion, and I would think most people will then leave it at that.  I might have to try that.  "Thanks" for the sugestion!

If you don't know the person, or don't like the person, and want to stop them dead in their tracks....  a simple, straight forward, "Why do you ask??" will usually work and make them realize they are out of line and out of their league.  If they do happen to stumble upon a rationalization of some sort, then you refer back to the previous replies... or just say "Thanks for noticing." and walk away... which in itself can be a scathing but polite way of telling them they overstepped their boundaries.

I'm ALL about not being intimidated by rude, mean, nosy people.  Can you tell?  ROFL!!

I am thankful for my family and friends.
Havent had to deal with any remarks lately. Was a lot of educating going on the first 6 months though.
Love it Ruthie! Will copy things to have! Great comebacks and polite too!

Most women my age (61) are on a diet or watching what they eat these days.  When people offer me more food, I use the Weigh****chers comeback "No Thanks, Maybe Later".  That always works well.

I don't eat in situations where people will watch what I'm eating.  I generally have protein and veggies on my plate which is exactly what "thin" women have on theirs.  When I walk into a restaurant, it's the heavy women that have the loaded plate, and the thin women that have a salad with protein on it.   I always ask the waitstaff to remove the bread basket and in fact, in California the pricier restaurants often say, "bread on request" on the menu.

The people that I have Thanksgiving with always celebrate my weightloss, in a private, personal way.  They've watched me at the table at 250 and are just so happy that I'm not stressing my body that way anymore.

I'm going to avoid the entire month of December because I'll be away from my office and recuperating from Plastic Surgery.  I'm so happy to avoid all the parties.  I've had enough parties in my mouth to last a lifetime!

RNY on 10/25/10 with
Ruthie, I LOVE your sample "replies", and i totally agree with your "thank you for noticing"... I also tell anyone who seems to be so "concerned" that I am "too thin", that I am under not one but TWO doctors. My pcp AND surgeon. BOTH are ecstatic over my weight loss (I have lost 103% of my excess weight!!!). and I continue to be monitored by them.

As far as holidays go, I am the cook, and will probably sample a little of the no no's. I will concentrate on turkey and a veggie, but will have a small bite of the other things too. AND I will have a 1/2 slice of pumpkin pie if I want. I honestly don't feel I am on a diet. My everyday life involves me making smart choices, so we'll see....
