Getting so few calories, should I limit my exercise?

My daughter was concerned that getting so few calories (760 cals) per day and working out for an hour a day may cause my body to hold on to my weight.  For example; I ate 760 calories yesterday and burned 400 calories exercising in the same day, will that affect my weight loss negatively?  I'm seeing the numbers go down on the scale.  But she definitely has me thinking about this.

Your thoughts please?

Focus on keeping your protein up, and don't worry about the calories.  By all means keep exercising!

I agree, keep your protein up.  If you start stalling again, raise your calories a little then come back down.  And you won't be at 760 forever.  As you progress, you will be adding calories.  I think how you are working out is also part of the equation.  Are you running, swimming, riding a bike?  At what speed are you doing whatever.  I can do an hour and not burn much or an hour and burn a lot.  Some cardio and muscle toning would be great now.

Price,
I'm using the treadmill @ 3.5 mph and eliptical 3 days a week along with weight training (weight machines at the gym).  I am doing water aerobics 2 days a week and walking 2 days a week.  Thanks for your advice.

Hope you had a great time on your cruise.  I missed your posts!

That sounds like a great, balanced plan.  I think you are doing great.  Just hang on and keep going.

Thanks.  We did have a good time.  Glad to be home though.

You can't not lose weight if you eat at a calorie deficit. I know there is a common idea that is out there that if we don't eat "enough" our body will "hold on" to the weight, but it deflies the laws of physics. If you expend the energy, it has to come from somewhere. On top of that, working out will help you not lose as much muscle mass and that is good for your metabolism.

What your daughter is forgetting is that you do have a source of calories besides your food. It's your body fat! The whole point is to burn up that fat and get rid of it.

My program recommends the following:

Calories < 800
Protein 70 - 90 g
Carbs < 40 g
Fats < 30 g
Exercise 4-5x a week for at least 45 min, a combo of strength and cardio

Until we are exercising more than that, we don't get told to modify the program. If you start training for a triathlon or something, then you get told to eat more protein. That may up your calories a bit but not that much. I was told to eat 100 g a day when I was training for my Sprint Tri and that only had my calories up to 900 a day and carbs to 45 g a day.

I felt good and had tons of energy eating this little and exercising 6-8 hours a week doing some intense stuff.

Now, as you get closer to goal and have less fat stores, if you are exercing a lot you may get told by your program to eat more but you probably will be eating more then anyway and it will even out.

Hi Mac,
You are 3 years out from your surgery and still eating only 800 calories?

By no means and I'm doing intensive exercise.  But just being 5 weeks post op RNY I think I'm pushing myself pretty hard.  Oh how I wish I could run even a 5k.  I envy you being able to run.  Hopefully, after I reach my goal my knee might let me try running again. I actually dream of running.

Yep, you're right my daugther forgot about all this fat I have stored up.  Thank you so much for your response/advice.

Hopefully your knee will be like mine and feel better and better with every pound dropped.  I'm not a runner by any means but I'm doing a shuffling jog with my dogs now that would have been unheard of 10 months ago.  There's no end to the miracles that can happen when we lose weight!

I will be starting to count calories soon but I haven't counted calories at all yet and I'm at 9 1/2 months.  I focus on my vitamins, protein shakes, water intake, and eat protein, then veggies, then carbs (which usually end up being none) along with at least 30 minutes of sustained movement every day.  I've lost an average of 10 lbs. per month since I started this journey... remember it's an AVERAGE... there are times our body has to take a break and redistribute and catch up.  When the scale doesn't move and you are still doing what you are supposed to be doing, don't sweat it.

Be patient and keep following your plan.  You seem to be right on track.  :-)

No, I'm not still eating 800 calories.

I eat about 1800-2100 calories a day now and workout about 6-15 hours a week depending on what time of year it is and what I'm training for.

Here is what I did the first year:
