Welcome!  You've gotten great responses. I just wanted to say you've chosen a great surgeon. He is one of the few vetted DS surgeons in the US, so he has taken the time to learn his craft for the benefit of his patients.

I don't recommend that you go to Nicaragua within a month or two of surgery.  - Here is my story  - it is not typical, but it can happen.

After surgery, I developed intolerance to many foods that I had previously enjoyed, such as milk, cheese and yogurt.  At two months, I'm still unable to eat "solid" food  other than soft fish etc.

I'm at two months, and just got back from Europe.  I couldn't eat most of what I was served for lunch or breakfast, so I drank protein shakes for two meals everyday, and ate fish for dinner.   In addition, I had some unexpected issues, which limited my ability to drink water and protein shakes for three days.   It was a tough time to stay hydrated, and dumping protein powder into a bottle of water on a plane is no fun either.  (Are you sure you want to bring opened boxes of white powder through customs.....) I've been back home for three days now, and my doc put me back on clear liquids followed by 4 days of protein shakes to settle everything down.

I'm scheduled for a trip to the wilderness of New Zealand in January, and I'm so glad I had my surgery in August.

My DH freaked out too but once he started reaping the rewards he was glad I did it. He was terrified to start with but once I told him my mind was made up he started to educate himself on the whole idea. I was barely heavy enough to have the surgery but comorbids were really a deciding factor. I had a major complication after surgery that can happen with any surgery but was definately something we were not planning on. I had a bowel obstruction and nearly died. DH stayed supportive and nursed me back to health. It was like I died and slowly came back to life. Almost like a butterfly in a cacoon. Now I can do alot that I could have never done before. It was the hardest but greatest decision I've ever made. I had definate buyers remorse early on with all my complications but now I wouldn't change a thing. God was working on me and hasn't stopped  yet!~

Welcome! I thought about the lap band to for a minute until my doctor put it very candid if I wanted to loose 50 pounds and that's it I should get the band if I wanted to loose more then I should consider other options. My bmi was about the same as yours and I got the same thing that I wasn't fat enough. Over one hundred pounds later I would have to disagree. Do what feels right and best of luck to you.

I also thought I would ONLY get a lap band. Went to the seminar and my whole theory was blown out of the water. It totally threw me that day. And YES my husband about had a cardiac arrest when I told him what I was newly entertaining, an RNY.

He was not on board at all! The seriousness of this surgery blew his mind, but as I dug in and continued with my testing, he slowly came around. He was very supportive once my date arrived and is VERY happy now. It was a difficult summer. But I navigated it and am successfully on the winning side of a fullfilling life.

I drink about as normal as anyone, but would have found it difficult to drink large amounts early on. Also, I never tried heavy traveling soon after surgery. I guess you can proceed with your plans and just wait ane see how good you feel following your surgery. Good luck!

This morning over coffee DH told me that he had researched the RNY on his day off and would support me in it 100%!  He found the spouse forum on his own and read through it.  (He did say it wasn't that helpful)  He also lurked on many forums all over the web.  He said that while he didn't feel I was fat enough he agreed that I certainly met the criteria and he would respect the NIH, CDC and WHO's guidelines.  YEAH!!  We did agree that I should wait until after Nicaragua or just not go this time.  I've gone yearly for 10 years.  I can't thank you enough for the support you have given me on this forum.  I will be a regular here for sure!
