Protein drinks and swinging lizards....

I am pretty new so I have questons....

First of all ....what is a swinging lizard?  What are lightweights, is that for after you have lost all the weight?

Ok I have gone for all my test, just waiting for them to set up my surgery date next month and I am on.  In the meantime I have been told to start looking for some protein drinks that I will like and I would love any suggestions.  I would also love to hear some tips for the first couple of weeks after surgery and any kind of help you think I could use.

Thank you!

Welcome aboard! I think there's a post from yesterday where I explain the swinging lizards. lol Check it out.

Congratulations on making the decision and taking the big step towards WLS. We lightweights start this journey in the neighborhood of 35-40ish BMI. So we have some different challenges than our heavier friends. We usually get small pretty fast and folks may berate us for not being big enough or taking the easy way out, BS like that. The LW board is a safe board and we all seem to get along no matter which surgery we're having. There's a Lightweight Creed post from the other day too. You might want to read that as well.

Protein shakes..my favorites are the creamy ones. I like IDS MultiPro vanilla-cinnamon to mix with milk/cream and pour coffee over. I like Syntrax Nectar chocolate truffle and strawberry mousse. Those taste the least like protein to me.

Good luck and keep asking questions. Oh, which surgery are you having and who's your surgeon? I'm in northern VA near Dulles.

Welcome.  LWs are any surgery type with just less to loose than some of our heavier friends.  We swing lizards (cats, etc) as a way of sendling love and support.

I switch around with my protein.  Lately I have been getting mine from GNC.  I do chocolate, chocolate carmel, cookies and cream.  I also like the Syntrax nectars, lemon tea, fuzzy navel.  Your taste will change so something you like before surgery may not be a favorite after but you may be ok with it later.  Vitalady has lots of samples and that is a good way to get an idea of a lot of different ones without buying a whole tub.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!   Welcome to our LW board!!!

I'm just repeating what is mentioned above.   Most of us started out lighter and were told by our friends that we don't need surgery but according to our BMI's we are considered morbidly obese or obese.  We accept everyone on our board so don't hestitate to join us.  We don't have drama on here and no question will ever be considered foolish.

I would order protein samples from vitalady.com.  I think they are $1.99 each plus postage.  It's hard to believe but your tastes will change after surgery.  I used to love cherry and fruit flavors but I couldn't even stand to smell them after WLS.   I had to start with chocolate and work my way up.  Others didn't like the chocolate but could handle the fruit tastes.  I know it sounds wierd but everything tasted saltier, sweeter, and stronger for about 6 months.

Locally I go to GNC.  I like their Pro Performance 100% Whey Chocolate and Cookies and Cream.  GNC lets you take back anything that you don't like within 30 days and have your receipt.  It's good to have a place local so if you run out and you don't have time to order.

At the beginning I couldn't drink the shakes but I would put the chocolate in SF hot chocolate and SF pudding.  I also bought GNC Any Whey which is unflavored.  I put it in soups, puddings, cooked it in my jello, milk, oatmeal etc.  I even mixed it in water and added a little crystal lite.

I order my protein from supplementwarehouse.com (they match other sites) or netrition.com. (they have $4.95 shipping) but most of the time paying the shipping and matching other sites prices turns out to be less expensive than getting the cheap shipping.

My favorite is the Syntrax Nectare Lemon Tea.  I drink mine plain but you can add crystal lite to it to make other flavors.  I also like Syntrax Twisted Cherry and a lot of our LW's like Suntrax Fuzzy Navel.

Welcome! My favorite is Nectar Sweets..but I agree get some samples and keep in mind your taste buds will likely change post op. I love to put the chocolate nectar in coffee..its like a mocha..or I will have a smoothie with the strawberry or vanilla with greek yogurt..yum! The first couple of weeks the focus will be on getting fluids in..so for the first couple of weeks i pretty much lived off isopure which is a protein drink that isn't as "heavy" as the others like nectar..

Thank you all so much, you have been so welcoming and great.  I unfortantely have a much higher BMI but would love to join you.  I have no grudges against those with less to lose, to me 10lbs is just as hard as 200....fat is fat and we are all just looking to feel comfortable in our bodies.

I am going to start looking into all those drinks.  There is soooo much to learn and I am so nervous I won't be prepared.

Melanie, welcome to the LW Board.

Good luck with getting your date and be sure to keep us posted.

Your surgeon will probably have his own guidelines for you after your surgery.  Most all of them are different for some reason.  My taste has totally changed.  I did not like spicy things before surgery and now I love it-just can't eat it much.

I love the Syntrax Nectar lemon tea - I take a 20 ozs bottle of water and add a stick of crystal lite lemon tea mix that up and put 1 scoop of the protein in a blender bottle pour in the water/crystal lite and shake good - let it settle some and add some ice- my favorite thing to drink.  I like the Syntrax Nectar Cappuccino(in my decaf coffee).  I use Hood Calorie Countdown Milk 2% it has a lot less carbs and calories.  I use about 1/4 cup of the milk and mix in 1 scoop of the cappuccino protein - mix really good and then I pour this into my hot coffee.  If you put the protein directly into the hot coffe it will clump up and make a big mess!!  I also like the IDS Cinnamon Vanilla to mix and put in my coffee.

I would order samples from Vitalady and try them after your surgery to see what you like.  I still order samples every now and then to see if I might like something different.

Welcome!!!

Your taste probably will change post surgery, so don't get too much protein powder pre-surgery. Also, your taste will be unique to you.

That said, the only powder I can tolerate still is BSN Lean Dessert. I have also recently discovered Power Pak Protein Pudding, which comes ready made in a can, and has 190 cals and 30 gms of protein per can. Expensive but worth it to me.
