Is there anyone who did not reach goal after VSG surgery?

Hi everybody! I'm 10 days out from my surgery. My BMI is 35.5. Here I'm considered lightweight, but when I go out, I'm invisible and feel horrible about the way I look.

Anyway, I need to lose 50 to 60 pounds. I'm starting to worry that I won't reach my goal. I'm a compulsive overeater. I don't go as far as some people, with a table full of food, etc... but I guess I do just enough to keep me from shedding the extra 50 lbs. :(

You should probably post this on the VSG board as you'll get more answers. Though I don't go there any more so you can only get my answer here.

The only way  you won't be able to shed any weight is to eat as many calories a day as you used to. Except, that's impossible in the early days. Most people can't get in more than 400-600 calories a day while on liquids. You have to lose weight if that's all you can eat. Hence, not losing weight is not an option.

That does mean you can't sabotage yourself. But it makes it harder to do. You have to really work at it IME.

Is there something in particular that is going on to cause this worry or is it just a general dread of failure?

Try not to worry and give it some time. If you're afraid of falling back into bad habits, perhaps try posting on Menus & Miles for some accountability and help if you need it.

You will lose early on, but later, you do have to work your sleeve. Tracking your food, exercise, support are all necessary for success. ANY weight loss surgery can be eaten around, so I would recommend some counseling regarding your eating issues, so that you can maximize your potential for success. Some people also find OA helpful.

As the saying goes, "They operate on our stomachs, not our heads."

I think alot of us worried about not losing. I worry about regain. Just do your best to make lifestyle changes during your first months while it is easier to drop the weight. Have support and try to stay connected to your support even when life gets busy. Staying on this board and posting my meals really helps me.

Log all your food and exercise atleast while you are still losing.
Good luck.

Yes, there are, one of them comes here and others are on the failed surgery board, but honestly - give the plan you were given by Dr. A an honest try. Do not borrow trouble before it comes.

Does not matter how far anybody else does or does not go, you take care of you and work on you!

Trouble comes of its own accord - do not start psyching yourself out now!

It's been said before, but you really do need to get help for your compulsive overeating. It IS possible to sabotage a sleeve and not lose weight and even to gain weight. it's just a tool, but a darn good one if you play be the rules. I also encourage you to add some sort of exercise to your daily plan. It really does make all the difference in keeping the metabolism up as we go into a low calorie starvation-mode.
