Protien Bars

DH and are have committed to buckling down and losing our last 20 pounds.  We both have 20 pounds to lose, but he has not had WLS.

I've got him committed to meal planning tonight.  We are a pretty on-the-go couple so we like things that we can grab take with us.  We talked about incorporating meal replacements (protein bars and protein drinks) into our meal planning, but I don't have any idea where to start with the protein bars.

I've focused on my protein drinks and eating dense protein food.  I haven't used the bars.  I'm sure they are a matter of taste like the protein drinks.  I'm really watching my carbs now too.

Any suggestions for high protein/lower carb bar?

Thanks,

Kay

I hope you get some good suggestions.  I rarely do protein bars because they are just to confusing to me.  The Rock n Roll bars (like a Payday candy bar) are the only ones I really trust so hopefully I can get some new ideas too.

Beef and Turkey Jerky is a great Protein on the go.

I use them more as a 'treat' or as dessert, but I like the Zone brand.  The chocolate actually tastes like chocolate, and the other flavors are good, too.

I really like the Think Thin  bars, as well as the Pure Protein ones.  Supreme Protien just came out with an awesome Peanut Butter and Jelly flavour that ROCKS!

Pure protein is a good bar in terms of stats and you can find them at Target and Wallyworld.  I can only do 1/2 at a time.

I pretty much don't like any of the bars that most people like. Think Thin? Blech. Power Crunch? Yuck. The Zone? Ugh. Supreme? Supremely gross. And so forth...

I do like the Labrada Rock 'n Roll bars. Some of the Oh Yeah! ones are okay too. (Not the wafers, the other ones.) They all give me gas from the sugar alcohols though. So I use them sparingly.

The only other bars I can stand tend to have a lot of sugar. I use them more as an energy boost before, during or after exercise when I can use the carbs (and sugar). I figure they have more protein than the typical workout food so it's a good tradeoff.

One thing to be careful with the bars is that a lot of them aren't particularly low in carbs and/or fat. They are more like a semi-healthy candy bar than a diet food.
You notice on the labels they talk about how much protein and how much sugar they have and then say things like "0 trans fats!" So it's easy to get fooled. Yeah, they may only have a few grams of sugar, but most of them have as many carbs as grams of protein, for example, and a lot of them have around 10 g of fat. Some of them have more carbs than protein!

I have  very strong opinions about  these bars as a personal trainer .   people eat them as  an ADJUNCT to meals not as meal substitutes  usually and  they are quite  fattening ...

I think U get a lot more visual and satisfying  calorie "  bang "  for U r" buck " if U sit down at a restaurant or at home and  eat a nice  fat free  fish  vegetable and salad  plate .   Use fat free dressing and no butter  and Ull be FINE  .

if U needa ready made one ..  tilapia in mango  salsa  pre packaged mirowaveable frozen meals  from  Walmart are super tasty and super low fat (  1.5  grams per i think)  just microwave for six minutes .   They even have veggies and a little rice in em .

I agree, I would much rather eat REAL food, but when you're on the trail doing a 20+ Km hike for 5 or more hours I don't want to carry too much with me, so the bars come in handy.  I will also bring a couple of boiled eggs, cheese and tuna patties but I treat myself to a bar on those occasions.

I do carry a bar with me on the weekends when I'm running around shopping all day because I don't like getting stuck with nothing to eat and nowhere appropriate TO eat.  :0)

I found out about the only protein bars I like on the OH Atkins website. They are Oh Yeah! wafer bars from ISS. I can buy at my gym, Vitamin Shoppe, or order online lots of places. They average about $1.40 per bar, 14 grams protein, very low carbs, no sugar alcohols. I like the vanilla peanut butter and chocolate, chocolate, though there are lots of other flavors. They are 210 calories per package and there are two "sticks", so it easy to eat only half at a time. I like the crunch, not too sweet.

I am off Quest bars, too fake sweet. I use Oh Yeah! rarely, but like to have one in my bag.

I love the Adkins chocolate hazelnut and almond cranberry bars as a occasional treat. The Supreme bars are really good too.
