Whey shots at Support Group!!!!

Tonight at our support group the dietician brought out some all whey protein shots....she said someone (I am guessing a marketer) brought them in this morning and she offered for all of us to try them.  I politely asked her of she could read the stats (I have no clue if I dump and sure wasnt going to dump on something like this)......of course the FIRST thing she says is collagen whey.  I said that in my reading we do better at absorbing whey concentrate and whey isolate......

IT really annoyed me that she didn't seem at all concerned about promoting these shots.  I know that some may think that these shots are okay but there were a lot of pre-ops in the group tonight and I tried to tell several that with their limited intake in  the beginning and will mal-absorption, it may be better to focus on whey concentrate/isolate.  I didnt taste any of them....they smelled gross and I just kept drinking my water.

Any thoughts???

What they said does not make sense.  Whey and Collagen are different sources of protein.  Whey is from milk, and collagen is from other sources (like skin).  So whey collagen is not an accurate description.  My nut says to stay away from collagen shots, as collagen is not a complete protein.

Well, the collagen shots (a more accurate name) may be "good enough" if you're sent home on clear fluids for a couple of days, but they're not a complete protein as you say. I used them that first week and just added them to my water. They had to be very much diluted for me to be able to stand the taste. I think they may be good for a very short duration or if you're after stronger finger nails or something. Not much nutritional value in them.

Always read the labels of protein products and look for products whose first ingredient is whey protein isolate. It doesn't have to be 100% whey protein isolate as blends are good too, they help us feel full longer.

they were not promoted at all in the beginning of my program but were offered as an alternative for occasional use if you couldn't keep anything else down.  I could never get past the smell and never bought one.  In our diet phase change meetings we had the opportunity to taste them and I thought they were pretty nasty.

This type of protein is used in the hospital to keep up patient's protein levels when they are on IVs and not taking in any other nutrition. And they work.

I personally believe that there is way too much drama and knocking of collagan protein online with very little evidence that using the shots is harmful. For some people, this is the only protein they can keep down. (Though personally I think they are gross.)

I appreciate your guys' input.

I just wish the dietician would have shared info about the different aspects of protein and what we should be aiming for, etc.  They are the experts yet sometimes I question if they really know about the specifics of bariatric needs (not all dieticians but some).

Happy almost Friday!!!!

They really don't get any post WLS training in school. They either pick up from the last dietitian who had the job or start reading everything medical they can find. Rarely do they listen to us. A few do and if you can find one of those, hold on to her.
