Heard Back From the NP

I sent my NP a message about my concern about my weight loss and I heard from her assistant today.  She said they wanted me to see the dietician.  Big surprise there.  I figured that would be what they wanted.  I told her that my insurance doesn't cover the dietician so she got back to me and said she was sending me something in the mail about how to get more calories in.  Maybe there will be some helpful information there.  She also wants me to see my surgeon.  Why?  What can he do?  Now I am afraid I'm going to get scolded or something.

Ugh! In the mean time, start mixing those protein shakes with 1/2 & 1/2 and put 6 - 8 of those suckers down a day.

ETA: Ok, just 6 should do it. I got carried away...

I'm glad you said 6.  I'm having enough trouble as it is.  I have to make my shakes double to get it all in.  I will pick up some 1/2 and 1/2 when I go to the store.  I didn't think of that.

The surgeon's visit is probably covered and he can tell you some of the same things as the NUT or maybe even have the NUT come by during the visit but not send it in to the insurance company as a NUT visit that won't be covered.

I make my shakes with 1 extra scoop of powder. That helps. If I'm really trying to get in protein, I use soy milk instead of water too. Also helps.

I already make double shakes.  I'm going to try it with half and half.  I've been using regular milk.

I know you have been using nut butters, but you can also put some nut butter into your shakes. Think peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, etc,. You could add some full fat Greek yogurt for a smoothie, which would help to add more calories.

Good Luck!!!

Did you know that George Washington Carver invented peanut butter as a way to provide additional nutrition for seniors that had a difficult time ingesting enough protein and calories? I saw a program on the History Channel about this a few years ago and thought that it was very interesting.

I have to give that a try.  A banana and peanut butter shake sounds real good.

I have been trying to gain weight - my protein shakes have about 350 calories inthem

8 ounces of milk, SF chocolate syrup (2 tablespoons), 1 1/2 scoops of chocolate protein powder, 5 ice cubes, 2 heaping tablespoons of SF chocolate pudding powder and a slice banana.  Gives you 45 grams of protein and about 350 calories.  Tastes great too.

I also add carbs - popcorn, fruits, pretzels, potatoes or pasta with my meals. This I dont' recommend but I also eat stuff like cookies and chips.  I needed to do this.  I got way below my normal weight and it kept falling off.  They were going to put me back on Tube feedings with TPN if I couldn't gain with food, so I did whatever I could. I have now gone from 125 to 140 since March. It hasn't been easy and is really tough realizing that I am going against everything I was taught not to eat.
