Good Morning. Where did 30 grams of protein come from?

This question is asked a lot around here and someone finally posted a decent article on one of the Facebook groups I belong to. Link: www.tomvenuto.com/asktom/protein_grams_per_meal.shtml  Now, Vitalady actually laid eyes on a study, pre-Internet, that suggests no more than 30 grams for most people and I tend to trust Vitalady with my life and will follow her into battle anywhere / anytime. So, IMO she's been validated again!  If your NUT is telling you no more than 60 grams a day, your NUT is wrong...IMO. Unless, of course, you weigh about 60 pounds and you are healthy and your protein serum, albumin and prealbumin are coming back from your labs in the upper end of the ranges.

Malabsorbers, we don't absorb the 30 grams, but don't reduce your intake! Sleevers, I need MacMadame to chime in here for you guys because other than your sleeve not being able to churn up your food as it used too and too little stomach acid, I'm not sure how you are affected. I guess you malabsorb in a way too.

What this article suggests that I tend to apply is 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh. Simple and easy enough for this dumb soldier to calculate.

Enjoy your protein shakes, babeeees!

I don't even look at how much protein at a meal anymore.  Counting my shakes/coffee, I eat 6x a day, always protein first and most meals are between 9-25g for food and 20-30 for suppliments.  Puts me in the 130-150 range everyday.  So it is 1.25x my weight but close enough.  Part of my increase to that amount is to get ready for knee surgery and have my protein levels at the top.

It REALLY helps to find a protein that you like.  I can't imagine getting what I need mentally and my body needs physically if I was on one of the no snacks, no shakes programs.  When I see newbees that complain about the shakes, it is so hard not to tell them to just get over it.  It's just as much about being healthy as taking your vits/mins.

Ok, off my soapbox.

What is fine in numbers? Protein serum in the high 6's or low 7's, and albumin in the 4's? If so, you're golden.

I know there are now 4 of us on the VSG board who know/admit/see in our labs (pick your word) that we need supplementing. Mac, I thought, said she was getting better about not needing to supplement with shakes.  With me, I need 3 a day to stay at 6.8, and have bumped it up to 4 a day to see if I can hit mid 7s.

For me before realizing my protein was in the crapper, I was eating 1 g of protein per lean body weight, not total body weight, although I average over 200 g a day (with 100 of those being in shake form).

I tried to add more acid in the form of hydrochloric acid and digestive enzyme supplements and my protein levels plummeted, so it wasnt worth experimenting over a month, for me.  Next month I will go for my between and betwixt protein lab and see if 4 gets me closer to mid 7s and do the cost/benefit analysis from there.

Those foods are pointless when it comes to filling me up girlie.  I know they work for you, and I know all the arguments for them, having been vegan, vegetarian, raw vegan defending myself in a carnivore world, but I dont see any point in wasting money and calories on foods that wont keep me full for more than an hour.

Your body and my body just dont work the same darlingirl.  I appreciate the thought though!
