don't beat yourself up - 18 pounds in the first month is good.  You are a lightweight.  According to my surgeon - we should lose 10 pounds per month for the first 6months and then 5 pounds per month for the next 6 months -totally 90 pounds for the first year.  That is exactly what I did.  I hit my goal of 100 pounds at 14 months.  So, going by that you are ahead of the game.

You also have to realize that besides eating some foods, you are being  fed high calorie, high protein through your g-tube.  This is usually given to people that are losing weight to fast and need to gain weight.  When I was in the hospital this winter and had lost 45 pounds in 3 months and I had already been happy where I was, they finally started feeding me with the gtube and had me eating during the day just to get me to stop losing weight.

You have to figure in the amount of calories that you are eating and getting in via the tube.  You need them to heal - especially the protein.  If things are still infected - do they have you on antibiotics?  have they considered IV antibiotics to get something stronger into you?
rbb825, thanks for your response. I'm going to try to clear some things up that I wasn't very clear on in my original post. I only get medications and fluids(water) through my g-tube. The only calories I get infused are to ones in my protein drink if I can't get what I need orally. I haven't had to have protein infused since I discovered the protein hot cocoa! Yummy!

I am on antibiotics again. The dr doesn't think we got it all last time. We are trying a couple of different ones and I'll take these for14 days this time. My dr doesn't believe that IV antibiotics are necessary at this point. And seein' how I don't like hospitals I readily agree!!! lol

Thanks, also, for sharing your early weight loss. You along with the others have made me realize that my weight loss may not impress my Dr. But it is enough to have me right where I should be!!!

That sucks that your DR isn't more supportive.  But as lots of others have said, you are actually doing fine with the weight loss considering all your body has been through.  Plus your body is probably trying to hold on to the weight because you have been sick and it is trying to protect you from losing too much.  Of course it doesn't realize you don't need its help!

When you have been as sick as you have, it is hard to stay positive so ranting and venting is necessary.  Vent anytime.  It's good for you.

As you get healthier, and the weight continues to come off, you can flaunt your new body in your doctor's face!

I can empathize with your frustrations and I hope you start to feel "real" again very soon!  I wanted to share with you an observation I made about my WL over the years and how I was able to actually SEE why I failed on my own so many times before.  After my WLS I was able to look at my WL graph and see a trend that has plagued me my entire life. When I was losing weight before surgery I would generally lose a bunch of weight and attributed it to my hard work with my diet and exercise.  Then about a month into it I'd just STOP losing....it seemed that no mater how hard I worked I didn't lose.....I would let this go on for about a week or two and then I'd just give up!  I never attributed it to MY metabolism.
My body has this thing it does and I never noticed it before I had WLS.  I lose weight for about 2 weeks...then BAM it stops.....for about 3 weeks...then all of a sudden I lose a TON of weight over several days then lose a few pounds over the next week and a half .......then BAM I stop again.....I went through this cycle through my entire WLS journey....it's just the way MY metabolism works....

I now know WHY I could never push past the "stalls" before.....

So as for you your body is TRYING to heal itself too and you may be retaining water as well...once they are able to stop your infection you will FEEL better and beable to do all the things you've been longing to do.....I'm sure it isn't too far off....In the mean time I'll swing some critters for ya!

Even with WLS isn't slow better for us?  I know we all want it gone yesterday, but coming off slow would seem like it would not be as much shock to the body, give our skin time to adjust instead etc.

Im hoping that mine is going to be slow and steady and if it goes at 2lbs a week its much better than 0 per week.

As for the infections thats got to be horrible.  Did they determine the cause of them?
