They really should have fixed the hiatal hernia when they did your VSG. That would have probably taken care of the reflux as it does for many of us. It definitely worked for me! My surgeon told us in group one month that he used to only fix hiatal hernias if he thought  they were big enough to cause symptoms but now he fixes them all, no matter how tiny, and as a result reflux at two years out is much lower than it used to be.

I think most with VSG revise to a DS. People like that because you get to keep your pyloric valve so that really diminishes your chances of getting reactive hypoglycemia.

Just realized that I did not respond to this.  I meant to but got side tracked.   When I got my LB in 2008, the doctor said when he went in there he fixed the hiatal hernia.  I never had a problem with it again as long as I would take my medication.  But now that I have my VSG 2yrs out it has come back if you will, and is causing me a lot of pain.

Thanks for your reply.

That sucks that it came back! I thought mine had but I'm finally off my PPI so I am crossing my fingers that it stays gone.

I was wondering the same thing..why they you wouldnt get revised to a DS....especially with your history of loosing a low amount of weight, you have the most sucess with the DS...

The DS would help the weight loss but not the reflux since she would still have the VSG.

Hi Ladytazz,

That is what I thinking that I might still have the reflux.  Thanks so much for replying.

But, if they fix the hiatal hernia, most likely not.

I have been told and read many times that RnY cures reflux, reflux is unheard of with RnY, etc. So I repeated this on a thread on the Main Board and had no fewer than 5 people chime in that they got RnY and now have TERRIBLE reflux! I've also heard many times that VSG *causes* reflux. Yet I know plenty of people like me that had theirs get better after VSG especially if a hiatal hernia was repaired at the same time. The  number who had reflux (that didn't go away in 6-12 months) who didn't have it before is pretty small actually. But "everyone knows" that RnY cures reflux and VSG causes it, right?

So my conclusion is: the bariatric medical community has no idea what does and doesn't cause reflux. But are quite happy to pretend they do!  And, yes, it bugs. These are our lives they are messing with. How can we make a good decision if what our doctors tell us is not based on science or hard data??

Just wanted to say BEST WISHES.....I had a GIGANTIC hiatal hernia (the biggest one my surgeon had ever seen!)   He said RNY was the ONLY surgery that could be done for me.....

I haven't had one single episode of acid reflux since my RNY surgery!  I can't tell you how much money I am saving on antacids (prescription & over the counter!)  I feel amazing!
Good luck!
