1 yr Dr. appt. Need more protein

My anniversary is next week but my 1 yr appt was today.  My Dr was very pleased with everything.  He said I am now normal BMI (I knew that) and had lost 95% of my excess weight.  We didn't talk about losing more weight or a final goal.  If it happens, it happens.   We agreed with the vit changes I planned on making.  He did suggest, however, before my knee replacement, I get my protein level up. It's 6.5 and has seemed to stay around there.  He seemed surprised at how much I was doing now, 125-145g a day usually, and suggested I make time to see the Nut.  She was busy so I will give her a call.  I can add another shake a day and/or up to 1.5 scoops instead of 1.  Any other ideas?  I would have a hard time adding more dense protein since I am doing 4 protein based meals a day now, usually 3 oz of protein at each.

I would just use 1 1/2 scoops in your shakes. Don't ask your NUT...she'll keel over dead when you tell her you're all ready taking in 125-145 grams a day. How was your albumin? If it was in the 4's you're fine. The dietitians I know say albumin and prealbumin are much better protein nutrition indicators than protein serum levels. Vitalady advises folks going in for plastics and major surgeries to increase their protein shakes and iron because those seem to take the biggest hit.

albumin was 4.2
I can add more protein in each shake.  That is easier than trying to fit in another shake.

I was amazed when I read your post, since I know how much protein you typically consume.  Good luck!

Gina said it best-your NUT would keel over! At my first orientation the one thing the NUT made clear is that it is wonderful to go on sites like OH but don't follow their advice about so much protein.  Yeah right, the people with the best results seem to be those of you who take in LOTS of protein.  Our NUT said between 60 and 80.  That's barely more than what nonWLS people are supposed to consume.

Way to go Price.  I need to schedule my 1 yr appt. too.

Mine was pretty understanding last time when I told her I was still doing 2-3 shakes.  they are a pretty reasonable group in terms of # of meals, protein, etc.  But more than 145 might set her over the edge.  I think I was doing around 100 last time we met.

I use Chike and a serving is 2 scoops. So I make my shakes with 3. It helps a lot. I do add more liquid but that's all good because then I have 1/4 of my fluid intake for the day over with by the time I'm done with my breakfast.

I had another powder where 1 scoop was a serving so for that one I used 2 scoops. It's just easier to measure than 1.5 for me.

Actually, the flavor is better.  I just am going to need to watch the calories, I fear.

Hi Price,
I don't know if you eat much greek yogurt, but I use FAGE and add a couple of scoops of unflavored protein.  I'm getting about 40g in my breakfast.  That might help.  Although I went to Costco to get my FAGE and they don't carry it anymore.  Their Kirkland brand isn't the same.  I am totally pissed about this.

You're doing fantastic!  I'm stalled with 25 more to lose and my follow up in 2 months.  Not sure if I'll make it to goal, but I feel great.
