Good Morning. When you were doing your research, did you hear the angels sing?

Do you remember when you heard the angels sing and you knew that you knew that your knew your chosen WLS was right for you?

I know some folks go to a surgeon and take what is offered but those of you that researched and read 'til your eyes bled, when did you know? What were some of your "ah ha" moments?

***********

I think I was reading Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and came across the success stats for the DS and started looking for a surgeon in my area that my insurance covered. Then I came across OH and started lurking here and there...found a surgeon in my area and called to get set up for his seminar.

I heard the angels sing when Dr Elariny went into his discussion of the 3 eating types and described the 3d eater as a grazer and that the DS, or "the bazooka" of all WLSs, was the best option for grazers. I definitely heard the angels sing then!  My only fear was that he would not do the DS on me because I was a lightweight. I was scheduled for an appointment with the dietitian and she even recognized I needed the DS and personally took my case to Dr Elariny right then before he had a chance to leave the office. Dr Elariny popped in and talked to me for a few minutes and realized as a retired military officer, I had done my homework and could follow orders. He said his LWs had great success with the DS and that I would be a piece of cake for him. lol  Anyway, within a month I was switched and I'm still alive and well to tell the tale.

My ah ha moment was during the original seminar with the surgical group here in town. Then I made the mistake of picking Dr. Williams as my surgeon and he shot me down...That's when I got to digging and finding someone to do mine.

I wanted the lap-band.  I wasn't THAT heavy (denial) and my PCP recommended it.  My girlfriend tried to talk me out of it, but I wasn't listening.  My ah-ha moment came at the seminar.  It was just information and I knew RNY was the choice for me.  This was the point where my research obsession started.  So far so good.

I'm very thankful that I didn't get the band. I don't think I would have had any success.

I came on here and on-line and researched before my information sessions (2 different groups) and had decided on a sleeve.  I went through all the way thinking my insurance would cover it and that was what I would get.  Then the insurance denied and at 61, I wasn't willing to wait and fight for a sleeve.  So my choices were RNY and band and I had read enough to know it wasn't going to be a band.  So no, angels didn't sing.  But I have been very happy with my RNY, have had no complications and all my co-morbidities are gone or going in the right direction.  Now the angels can sing their little hearts out.

I would have a lap-band right now if the surgeon and hospital had gotten their Center of Excellence approval...  I'm so thankful that did not happen because I am very happy with my RNY and I do think that was the right surgery for me.

After having two consultations and both recommending RNY over band, I decided that was for me.  My insurance would not pay for the sleeve either and I was not willing to put up the fight.  It just seemed to all fall in place and felt so right.  DH got on board and was ok with it and really liked my surgeon and seemed to trust him so that really helped along.

I think the angels were trying to talk to me after the 1st consultation, I was just not listening very well!!

I knew the RNY was right for me from the first time I read about it in 2002. I just knew it. Then my dad and brother both had RNY before me and had tremendous success. Since all of us have the same body type, I knew it was the right decision for me as well. So far so good! Sing angels!!

Yes, when researching I came across the VSG and just knew that it was the perfect fit for me!  Angels are still singing!

It was when I read that the part of the stomach removed to make the sleev is the part that makes ghrelin. I knew I'd be successful if I had no/little ghrelin!

Those angels sang loud and clear when I read about the malabsorptive component of the RNY. I'd been described by my PCP and an endocrinologist as being hyperabsorptive, but was not a grazer so the DS would have been overkill for me.

They're still singing 21 months later - and I hope they continue to do so!

Hi! can someone describe what a grazer is? If I buy cookies and eat a bunch until I'm full; then eat a bunch before I'm even fully hungry again, would that make me a grazer?
