This sizing thing is so confusing. I hate trying on clothes at the store. I shop mainly at Goodwill and I usually just pick out the size I think I wear and buy it. Sometimes I get home and they don't fit and Goodwill isn't good about exchanges (not that I like to do that anyway) so I have things that I wind up not being able to wear. The last time I bought clothes I bought 4 pairs of jeans and the sizes wound up being 0, 1, 2 and 3.
What is funny to me is I remember when I was very young, in my 20's, and I lost weight. I wore a size 3 at 120lbs and they would fit me up to about 130lbs. Then I had my son in 1985 and I managed to lose the pregnancy weight and got to 130lbs again. I brought out all my old clothes, size 3, and none of them fit. I wound up in a size 6 at the exact same weight.
In 2002 when I had my first WLS I got to about 120lbs and wore a size 3. I could wear that size up to about 130lbs. The same size I wore before I had children. I knew my body hadn't changed but the clothes sizes had.
This time, when I was 120lbs I was a size 6 or 4 for some reason. Couldn't squeeze into a size 3 to save my life. Same weight but I think it was because of age and less muscle and more fat and just different distribution. And it seems they no longer make size 3 or at least I could hardly find them except in some thrift stores. I lost 10 more pounds before I could fit into a size 3 again (actually a size 2). Talk about screwy.

Eh, I think that article is exaggerated. I am a size 2. Sure, I have a few 0s in my closet and a few 4s but mostly I fit in a 2. I certainly don't have sizes from 0 to 8! I also can usually tell when I grab the clothes if they are sized large or small and so then I might bring the next size down or up into the dressing room. But that's it. I'm not walking around with 10 of every item in all different sizes.
Also, I don't believe there was ever a time when sizes were standardized. I was an adult in the 80s and there were the same issues with sizes back then as there are now.
There is one area where sizes are crazy though... athletic wear! I have racing kits and workout clothes in sizes from XS to L!

I just go back to my experience. I have 2 belts that I wore in high school when I was a size 12-14 in low-rise pants. I wear them now in the same holes in low rise pants that are size 2-4.
At this point, I agree with one person quoted in the article that sizes today are relative rather than absolutes. I don't worry about the number anymore, I just consider it a designation that the manufacturer/retailer puts on for their own use.
