and the Dr asked if he'd considered Weight Loss Surgery...

Well.. he and I discussed it shortly after we started dating (a couple of months).. and he definitely said he wouldn't do it... now he's considering it.

The Dr was a big fan of Lap Band... well.. he knows what I think about that.  I know there are many people who have been successful with it but I support the VSG for him.  He is a volume eater...  he also asked the Dr if he would be his primary support.  The Dr said no - he'd be going to the surgeons, who I didn't go to because of communication issues with the office... so we would have to work that out...

We'll see where this goes.  Now, not to think too much of myself, but really.. could he have a better coach?  LOL...

I'm not going to pu**** he will make his own decisions in his time. I did tell him he needed to do his research.. and with the VSG I know he could convert to the DS if needed.

Also, he needs to see what his insurance will/won't cover.

I'm glad it was put to him by a professional.  I don't want to seem pushy, but do want to see him healthy.  Other than his blood pressure, he's as healthy as a horse.  His BMI is 43.

I'm glad to hear that he is more open to the idea now. Good luck!

If I'm understanding our abbreviations correctly, I would say that's a wow moment working its way up to a (sort of) non wls victory, isn't it??   Funny how it takes coming from the mouth of a professional for something like that to become a feasible idea.  LOL

Hoping for the best outcome possible for you both!

That's great, Jody. I'm glad his doc talked about it with him. I would never have guessed his BMI was 43 though.

Good that he is considering it Jody. The VSG is a good surgery.

However, have him check his insurance policy...many policies written out there allow for only one surgery per lifetime, not one surgery per policy. So if he is considering the DS as a revision, that may play into it...he could get the VSG and then if he wanted to revise, he's have to pay out of pocket. Wouldn't want him thinking he can revise if he can't according to his policy. Some still allow revisions but the criteria to qualify is fairly strict.

Anyway, glad to know he only has one co-morbid and that he is considering it...it's much easier if your spouse/partner is on the journey with you.

He has sleep apnea too, which he is in denial about... so that would work for him too.

He doesn't really know anything about the surgeries, I'm the one recommending the VSG with the possibility of a DS revision, but I don't think he would end up there.  I don't think he would be as dedicated to the vitamin/protein regimine as he would need to be for the DS, especially long term.

Heck, I don't even know if his insurance will cover any WLS... but I'm not going to pu**** its up to him and his choice.  He knows all he has to do is ask.

Ugh, the "one WLS per lifetime" clause really gets my dander up. Can you imagine if there were clauses like that for things like heart bypass surgery? Sorry, we already fixed up your arteries once. Sorry they crapped out on you again, but you are stuck with it...

As we all know, it isn't for everyone and he will have to make up his own mind.  but how nice that he ahs you and how nice that it came from his PCP.  Interesting development for sure.

He will have an amazing coach. Best of luck to the both of you as he embarks on his journey. It is great to know we don't have to do any of this alone.

It's nice to hear that some PCPs are at least recommending that their patients consider WLS instead of just berating them for being overweight.  And it is funny how hearing it from a professional can influence people so much more than hearing it from a loved one.  Go figure!
Tom is lucky to have you Jody.
