Low bmi too drastic??
As some of you may know i had my band removed 6 weeks ago. Since then my insurance has been pending my sleeve surgery. It is going through the appeals process. Hopefully quickly since my surgery is scheduled for mon.
My bmi is currenly 32 (it was 35 when appealed so i am technically meeting insurance requirements with co-morbidities).
I am going through a difficult time though especially with people at the hospital saying I don't look big enough to have surgery etc. I guess i carry my weight well because instead of looking 195, what I really weigh, most people think i look 140 or 150.
Since going through this insurance process I am thinking is this really not meant to be?
The only thing I've ever wanted was to be a normal weight and be healthy. The lowest I ever was, even as a teenager was 185.
Have any of you had a revision or even a virgin wls with a bmi like mine(32)?

Hi-you didn't say when you had your lap-band put in? I understand that most insurances require you to be at least 100 pounds overweight and a BMI of 35 or higher with co morbidities, or 40 or higher with no comorbities. Revision surgery also usually needs to be done within 2 years of the original surgery, at least it's that way with AETNA. If it is meant to be, it will work out. Best of luck to you!
I met all the criteria but still had folks saying all those things. Boy are they surprised now that I have lost 100lbs. So many people are overweight, I don't think we know what normal is anymore, or what it looks like.
Do you have co-morbidities? Are you healthy where you are? Are you likely, or more likely to regain without surgery?
Only you can make the determination for you. In your heart of hearts, you will know what to do.

You are so right, Price.
So many people say "I must carry my weight well". But I know when I looked at pictures of myself when I was heavy, I was always way fatter than I thougth I was. I did NOT "carry my weight well" as much as I tried to tell myself this.
This might make you think, "I'm not a good judge so I should trust other people's judgement." But the problem with that is they aren't objective about weight issues either! For example, my sister was obsessed that I not weigh less than her youngest kid. Who was taller than me. I don't know what her issue was, but it was clear that, if I got smaller than her kid, I would "win" somehow. Other people on here have had the experience of being told that we are 'too thin' when they are still 30 pounds overweight!
What I have discovered is that you can't trust other people when it comes to weight. We all have our weirdnesses about it and that colors everything we say and do. Some people think they have to protect you and minimize your weight. Others think anyone who is smaller than them must be anorexic. Others are just not used to you at a smaller weight and every time you see them, they accuse you of losing more weight when your weight has been stable for months.
I don't know what the answer is. If you can't trust anyone when it comes to weight, what do you do? I know I had to get this surgery to get my life back and to avoid dying young. So I just didn't listen to anyone who didn't agree. Maybe that's not the right answer, but it worked for me.

I too get stares and questions about "being too small for bariatric surgery". When I started the process, I was 37.5 BMI, but I have been working hard and getting fit, and I lost 25 lbs before surgery, so I now fit into clothes 2 sizes smaller than I used to. I also no longer have a marshmallow face! At surgery time, my BMI was very close to 35.
I keep telling myself that I still have 80 lbs to go, so I can't lose sight of the overall goal. I'm also looking forward to doing all the things that I had to give up because of my weight.
