Carbs are my worst enemy!!! ARGGGHHH!!!

So, I am on a pre-op diet now (surgery in about four weeks) and I have to limit my carbs.

The problem is that I love carbs and find it very difficult to avoid them. Last night, I didn't avoid them. Aside from feeling sick to my stomach from binging on carbs last night, I am afraid that I won't be able to resist them after surgery.

I have been reading some good books about emotional eating and trigger foods etc. It all makes sense to my head but the cravings are still there.

I am afraid that I will go through the surgery and screw it up. There is no point in surgery if I cannot stick to the diet.

I had surgery cause I always failed diets...this isn't a diet, it's a new way of life.

Carbs are only my enemy because I have *paint peeling* gas if I eat too many. We need carbs, a few good ones, to make our bodies work right but those are mainly the veggie & fruit type carbs,  not the white/floury type we consider true carbs.

Don't beat yourself up at this point. It's surprising how easy limiting carbs are after surgery when you pay for it. :)

Your body will crave them until it is totally gone from your body...I had to go gluten free which meant giving up ALL of my favorite refined carbs and I literally had dreams of eating pizza and bread for like 2 weeks...now I almost never eat carbs except vegetables and fruits and I don't even want them anymore (the bad carbs)...just take it day by day and keep at it..After the surgery it will be easy to avoid the carbs if you eat like you are suppose to, protein first then vegetables..you simply won't have room for them.

I was a carb girl.....never met a bread or pasta that I didn't like.  I am not going to lie......still would like them....BUT I havent had a piece of bread since surgery of a string of spaghetti.  It hasnt killed me and I can honestly say this hasnt been that hard.  I have NEVER gone this long without major carbs.....havent had more than 20 grams in a serving and still have no clue if I dum*****t.  NOW, I am early out....this will be a life long battle and I am still working on the emotional eating part.  But, I can honestly say that this surgery has SO helped me with the battle and I am sure yours will too.  It is different.....not easy but different.

I wish you the best of luck!!

July 23, 2010 isn't just the day I had my surgery.  It is the day I stopped eating refined carbs.  Something about having major surgery and being on heavy duty pain meds, not to mention having most of my stomach removed, took away the desire to have refined carbs.  I try to keep any carbs I eat in the most natural state I can find, like whole fruit and vegetables.
I am a recovering alcoholic and I found that I have to completely avoid all forms of alcohol.  It is the same with the refined carbs for me.  I can't eat them in moderation.  I tried for years and I failed for years.  I completely blame the refined carbs for my utter failure with my first WLS, a surgery that is practically fool proof for most people.
I have to say that it is very easy right now not to eat them once I make up my mind to it and don't play around with it, a bite here or there.  That just doesn't work for me.  It may sound pretty strict but I have to be honest with myself and do what works best for me.

Believe me, it isn't self discipline.  If I had any self discipline I could eat a piece of bread and then move on.  I have no self control when it comes to refined carbs.  That is why I avoid them completely.  It is easier to say no then it is to have a little.  And, for me, eating a little always sets up a desire for more.  And more.

I worried about that too, but once I had surgery and started following the protein first rule there wasn't any room for carbs.  Early out I didn't even have room for vegetables and fruit.

Once you get decarbed then don't make the mistake of adding them back in too soon.  During the honeymoon period you can have carbs and not gain weight (might slow down weight loss) and most people are fooled into thinking they can have them and not gain, but once the honeymoon period is over then you are hooked again and some of the weight will come back on.
