doing well

hi everyone.  been doing lots of resting, so havnt been online much.  doing well, getting in my liquids, not as much as i *should* be getting in yet, but every day is a new challenge.  setting my timer to drink.  been having little bits of cheese soup which goes down really well, and settles my tummy when it's feeling not too nice.

so, the stool softener they prescribed for me is in a capsule, assuming it's an oil.  thoughts on this???  i've read we dont digest this?  so, talking to the hospital nutritionist- the one who works with the patients right after their surgeries- she asked me about my vitamin D supplements.  i told her they were the wrong kind, that they were D2 in an oil capsule and that i needed dry D3.  she told me what i am taking is fine.  am i reading things wrong???

she was happy that i am taking more iron than whats just in my multi.  and that was the end of her vitamin speech.

so, to end my confusion- and to begin a little inner rant about how much we are paying these bariatric nutritionists- can you please remind me about things in gel capsules- like vitamin E?

thanks you all so much for your support and care!  i really believe that knowledge is my power, and i dont want to mess this up, as it's the rest of my life i am structuring and being a scientist for!

Hang in there and keep after the fluids. Many NUTs haven't caught on yet about the oil-based D2. You need dry or water soluble A, D3, E & K.  D2 is the least potent and we do a lousy job absorbing it. No need to argue with her. Make sure your iron isn't ferrous sulfate. Carbonyl, polysaccharides or heme, or a combo of those work best for us malabsorbers. Heme causes the least intestinal issues such as constipation.

Keep taking the stool softeners. The over the counter ones work for me and I have a lot of malabsorption. They may not be oil based but another kind of liquid.

It's not just malaborbers on some of these things either. For iron, ferrous sulfate requires an acidic environment to break down and VSGers haven't got that.

will add this to my RNY folder, gina.  thank you for the knowledge.  i honestly wish the nutritionists would earn their keep a little bit better; it's a very confusing world to live in as a new bariatric patient!

There are some great dietitians out there. They actually listen to their patients and watch the trends of their labs. Some will even help you to optimize your labs if that is your goal.
