RNY Weightloss Window Question

I've read that as RNYer's there is a weightloss window of about 18 - 24 mths.  Can someone explain to me why?

How can that only be the window when the anatomy has been changed?

How can the malabsorption just stop malasorbing?

Is this window of time because we go back to old habits?

Or is it because we stretch the pouch?

Sorry it's just a question that has been bugging me.

I've read that as well, Karin. I think it's a combo of all the things you listed. The only thing you never get back is the ability to absorb micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as you did when you were a normie. You may be able to absorb some but never to the degree you did before.

Thanks Gina,

I just wondered why so many have that little re-gain that s often spoke about?  I just figured that maybe it's mostly old habits creeping back in over time.

We certainly can eat more with time but that starts earlier than 18-24 months.  I heard it was because that was when the malabsorption of calories was the greatest.  That our bodys become more adapted to their new state and soak up that fat and calories even if they don't get the vits and minerals.  That is why we take those for life even though we absorb more calories.  But if you read, you see folks also go back to old habits and that doesn't help any either.

there is also something refer to as bounce back weight gain, around 5 lbs.  I think that is different but don't know for sure.

Thanks Price, for your reply.  I'm losing at such a slow rate and probably because I'm closer to goal.  I know I should only weigh about 120lbs or so but if I can just reach the 140ish lbs I'll be a happy gal and fit back into my smaller clothes that I have so many of :)  I don't like the idea of the possibility I could regain 5 - 10 lbs.

Combo I guess.
I know if you signifiicantly overeat (easier to do with time) your pouch can stretch to the size of a stomach, especially since more calories are absorbed over time.

From what I have read...the intestines regenerate villi over time that increases caloric absorption. I think as long as we readjust our intake if the scale goes up, we should be able to avoid bounceback...hopefully lol
