Good Morning. Yep, there are still programs out there...

...giving 20 year old nutritional and vitamin advice. The original poster got the same advice out of the same booklet from Mayo clinic 5 years ago when she got the band. Now she's being revised to the DS. Can you imagine what would happen if any WLS type followed this vitamin advice? TUMS and 2 chewable multies? Really?

Of course the DS vets chewed up this program, spit it out and stomped it to death. lol

As part of my pre-op schedule, I met with a nutritionalist today and here are some of the tidbits I got from it.  Please let me know what you think because some of it conflicts with info. I've read.

*She said my diet after surgery would be very similar to the RNY or sleeve surgeries that were also recommended to me.
*After surgery I'll be on liquids for 1-2 days, pureed foods for a month, then mechanical-soft foods for a month, then soft foods for another month and finally regular foods.
*I'll start out having 3-6 small meals a day and work towards 3 meals/day with no snacks (because snacks tend to make you gain weight).  She even discouraged sugar free popsicles as snacks.  Each meal will be 1-1.5 cups of food.
*Protein shakes are not recommeded after the first month-should be on regular foods from then on.
*Vitamins required after surgery are: 2 chewable vitamins, 2 Tums Ultra (more if I can't get 3 cups of milk in every day) and a Vitamin B12 injection every month.  She made it sound like more supplements/vitamins are often NOT needed other than those.
*Blood labs are taken every 3 months for the first year and yearly after that.
*Must maintain low fat/low carb diet long term.....avoid oils, butter, gravy, nuts, avacados, peanut butter, bacon, sausage, whole milk cheeses, sweets, fried meats, etc.
*Goal of 60 grams of protein daily....maybe a little higher in the long term with the DS

Here's a sample menu for a pureed diet (while still in the hospital):

7:30-8am: 1 medicine cup of pureed, cooked cereal with a small amount of skim milk to thin or moisten the cereal.  1 soft, scrambled egg.

8:30-9am: 8 oz. skim or 1% milk.

10-10:30am: 2 medicine cups pureed cottage cheese, 1 medicine cup pureed fruit.

11-noon: 8 oz. water or other low-calorie, non-carbonated liquid.

12:30-1pm: 2 medicine cups of pureed lean meat, 1 medicine cup of pureed vegetables.

1:30-2:30pm: 8 oz. skim or 1% milk

3-3:30pm: 2-3 medicine cups of sugar-free/no-sugar-added pudding or custard

4-5pm: 8 oz. vegetable juice

5:30-6pm: 2 medicine cups of pureed lean meat, 1 medicine cup of mashed potatoes.

6:30-7:30pm: 8 oz. of skim or 1% milk with no-sugar-added instant breakfast mix

8-8:30pm: 2-3 medicine cups of no-sugar-added pureed fruit.

9-10pm: 8 oz. water or other low-calorie, non carbonated liquid.

Well, great question this morning.  I know when I visited Dr. Pomp's office two weeks ago for my 7 month 6 month checkup, his physician assistant had a cow that I wasn't following their office's explicit instructions on supplements (Bariatric multi with high-ADEK).  His NUT, however, did know about Vitalady's DS recommendations and didn't have a cow.  The NUT still wanted me to drink skim or skim plus milk.  *Sigh*

I will let my labs speak for themselves.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled forum.

How very sad.  if I thought I was going to have to eat like that for a month, I don't know if I could do it. I guess mine didn't look much better but medicine cups of pureed food sounds a lot worse than 1/4c of anything, pureed.

What horrible information.  How many disasters did this group turn out who are just accidents waiting to happen by following their Drs advice.  and we wonder why folks get sick after WLS.  Information like this is why.

I laughed at some of the basic, basic, to the lowest common denominator, information my group gave.  But for the most part, it was accurate and health producing, not health destroying.

Yep - and usually we think its the fault of the person who had surgery because they weren't following the "rules", but then when you get "rules" like that - how can you be successful?  Yes, you'll lose weight, but you're going to lose a LOT more than that in the long run.

Gina, it's truly amazing what they say out there.  I have a great support group that I go to 2x a month and a doctor that responds to email etc, but the truth is that I learned so much here at OH.  I feel like this LW board schooled me up on how to be successful.  So hat's off to all of you old timers around here that devote so much time to educating us all!

Wow!!! I couldn't eat that much in the hospital, nor could I tolerate most of those foods for the first couple of months. My program isn't perfect, but they have pretty right on with the vitamin and protein supplements, even though they would like people to get most of their protein from food by 6 months out. The recommendations that you listed are very, very outdated and scary.

WOW!  I think it would be easier to tell you, the very few things that I consider correct!  I don't have a DS and am well aware of just how wrong that is (wrong for most wls in fact as far as I am concerned) to eat the cereal and avoid the fats!  Incredible!  I feel bad for anyone who has taken their advice, they could be doomed!

I'm just drifting over from the DS Board.

When I saw the original post, it reminded me of the nutritional guidance I got with my RNY in 1989: drink a glass of milk and 2 childrens chewable multivits every day.
