Hands falling asleep when I'm sleeping

I have woken up every day this week and a few time during the night because my hands have fallen asleep.  The "asleep tingling" is waking me up and not very comfortable.  I've tried different sleeping positions, but it continues to happen.

Any ideas to help?  Could this be vitamin related?

I had that a lot pre-op but not any more. What was your last B12 lab level?

I'll have to double check.  I got my labs done when I wasn't feeling well a couple of months ago, but I don't have a copy.  I'll get a copy and check.

I get them drawn again in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Kay

While it could be related to vitamins, you can also have a neuropathy like carpal tunnel that has nothing to do with vitamins.

Check your B12 and B6 levels, too low of B12 is as bad as too high of B6. Both sides can cause neuropathy. It's also why the ONLY B I add beyond my multi is B12.

If your levels are okay, consult a neurologist.

Liz, where did you hear that about B6? I thought most B's were water soluable?

Deb, it is water soluble, however, too much can be toxic to the nervous system. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb6/ about halfway down under the recommended dosages.

I first learned about both B6 and B12 right after I was diagnosed with Peripherial Neuropathy about 15 years ago. I was active in the Neuropathy Association http://www.neuropathy.org for years. We were always taking extra B12 but learned very quickly to not add any extra B6.

And while we do malabsorb vitamins, it's still prudent to not overdo that particular one. Nerve damage is too high a price to pay for adding too much of it. And since I take two multi's a day, that is enough B6. I do add extra B12 to prevent nerve damage as well.

Thanks for sharing the site. It doesn't always seem to me though that the govermental agencies are up to speed on the vitamin issues for WLS.

I do have a good friend (non WLS) who is having neuropathy issues. Do you have any ideas of things that might help?

thanks, deb366

Deb, while the government agencies aren't always up to speed, the info about B6 is backed by research and anecdotal evidence of those of us who have PN.

What I have learned about PN could fill a book (and it has, several) but not by me, :) There are several good books on the issue as well as the Neuropathy.org web site. There is a bookstore on that site and amoung them is a couple of books listed by John Senneff called "Numb Toes and Aching Soles: Coping with Peripheral Neuropathy" The store is listed under Resources.

Thanks for the info! Will pass it on to my friend. I also checked my vits, I take biotin and folic acid with my b12, but my b12 is always off the charts when I have my labs done....

I've used computers for so many years that carpal tunnel is my fear.  I'll double check my labs and go from there.

Thanks for your advice.
