I just wanted to take a minute from all of the hustle and bustle of preparing my home and life for my surgery date to say how thrilled I am that I found this forum and my on-line friends here. In real life I have some support but not nearly enough, and the support people in my life aren't very knowledgeable because we don't know anyone who's had wls. The main boards were not very supportive and my in person group can be hostile at times because I'm a lightweight. But then I found you all here. You have been patient with my, answered all my question and supported my decision to have wls when others wouldn't.  I don't know what my life will hold after the surgery. I don't know how many of my personal relationships will survive the first year, and to be honest, that's a little scary to me. I do know that I will he healthier. I will be more active, and if I lose any relationships because of this decision, they needed to be removed anyway!  I know that I can continue to count on you all here for advice, information, and support.  Thank you all for making me feel welcomed and supported! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!!              -Julie

Julie, I'm not sure how the planets aligned to get this group together but it was good and it worked.  This is an amazing group of folks who offer support to anyone requesting it.  I have found a "home" here as many others have.

glad you found us.  Stick around, it gets better.

Welcome Julie.  I'm like you; I didn't know anyone personally that had WLS before me.  I think I would have freaked out without the support and information I found here.

I hope your relationships don't suffer because of your decision.  I had one relationship I worried about, but that friendship seems to be ok after all.  The people in your life will have an adjustment just like you.  Once you get through surgery and it becomes a normal aspect of your life, hopefully any drama that went with it will go away.

Good luck.

I am so glad you found us too. This forum has gotten me through some pretty rough spots. They understand things that other people have no idea about. Remember there is no question too silly to post. If you are concerned post it...someone has exprienced it before. I wish you the best in your recovery. Don't worry about the relationship issues. You will be the same person on the inside. If they really care they will be there!

We are glad you found us too and we are all so excited for your upcoming surgery because WE KNOW the WOW's will be coming soon!!!   It's the newbies WOW's and enthusisam that keeps the LW board going and keeps us oldies excited and sometimes keeps us on track with our own journey.

I haven't lost any friends during my journey but I have been very sensitive to how others feel about it.  I don't preach to my heavier friends and I try to act "normal" around everyone.  The only person that I have had problems with is my oldest DD.  She has gained weight and if I even mention something good (delicious not healthy) for lunch she takes it personally so I have to be very careful what I talk about around her.  Now...if that was a friend she probably be gone, but I don't want to do anything to make my DD upset.

I understand your sentiments! I've already had two people say that I wasn't big enough to qualify (whatevah!) for the surgery.  I patiently explained HOW I qualified and that seemed to mollify them.  So far I've had a wonderful support system here at home and finally on this forum.  I also know how unsupportive some of those main boards can be when I asked a question about my post surgery experience.  Wow.  I agree though, if a relationship cannot sustain this surgery then it wasn't strong enough to begin with and you're right - it needed to be removed.  Anywho, I have always held the thought that my decision to have this surgery does not affect anyone else's quality of life nor does it affect them in any other aspect of their lives so they really have no place to say anything and if they don't like that I had the surgery...TOO BAD.

I have this forum bookmarked and tagged on my laptop - to whoever started this one, you have my thanks and my appreciation!

Amen, Lightweight Sister!

I have two cousins who have had WLS, but they live 1500 miles away. I don't have anyone in my life who supports me like this group.  They are AWESOME!

I went to my surgeon's support group this week.  I sat next to a man who lost 294 lbs.  That's more than I weighed when I had surgery!

I'm glad you found us!
