I must share...please read
One of my patients came in for a return to work clearance the other day. She had RNY 5 yrs ago and gradually quit taking her supplements because she felt fine.
She was recently off work for 2 weeks because she had been hospitalized for severe anemia requiring 3 blood transfusions and 2 iron infusions.
-------------
When you sign your name on that surgery consent form you are signing for a lifetime of vitmain supplementation - regardless of how you feel!
Vitamins are not just a good idea or something you should do. They are mandatory and if you are not taking them you are commiting slow suicide.
Please, please, please take your vitamins EVERY DAY!
Stepping down off soap box now....

Another point that I heard and hate to have to repeat but, here this is a good time:
"If you can't afford protein powders, vitamin/mineral supplements, and special foods just for you... maybe you should reconsider whether now is the right time for weight loss surgery. It *requires* the patient to be compliant so that they don't die from malnutrition related complications."
Thanks for the reminder Bekah.

Thanks Bekah! Gina tries to remind everyone how importart vitamins and labs are but sometimes we need someone else to tell it like it is too!!
I have a friend who is around 8 years out who doesn't take her vitamins and lives on chocolate and potato chips....is she thin..YES, but she looks really old, her health isn't good, and her bones break easily. Her doctor says she is burning up her body from the inside out.

It's very sad. I see it all the time. People have surgery - lose weight and then pretend they never had surgery.
Why? Why would you put yourself at risk of surgery and complications and work so hard for a year or more to throw it all away for malnutrition and potential death? It just doesn't make sense to me.
I NEVER want to forget where I was 6 years ago. It keeps me motivated to stay healthy and nurture the gift I've been given.
I do post these case stories on occasion because you need to know that it really happens. But I sure hope it doesn't happen to any of us! WE KNOW BETTER!
Cheers all! Have a great week!
