I couldn't drink any kind of milk before surgery so I just drank a lot of broths, SF jello, etc.  You don't have to be worrying about Protein right now.  Leave that for a few weeks after surgery.

I disagree. The pre-op diet is supposed to clear the glycogen out of your liver. So it should be high protein, low carb.

Btw, it absolutely does NOT have to be liquid. There is nothing magic about liquids when it comes to clearing out the liver.

They probably figure as long as you lose weight, the liver will be easy to work with and a lot of people lose weight on these diets as there are so few calories. There is some truth to that but, again, there is nothing magic about liquids.

Someone in our support group was asking about this and wondered if the liver would be okay if they didn't actually lose any weight and our surgeon said no. They were doing a liquid diet and thought as long as they were religious about only having liquids, it would somehow magically help their liver even though they were consuming high calorie liquids and not losing weight.

A lot of of our LW's only have to do a liquid diet a couple of days before surgery.  You are probably right about the protein and I shouldn't have told her it was ok to go against her drs. orders. I totally misunderstood what she was writing about.  I thought she meant she was getting sick on the drinks but she meant the ingredients were poisoning her.

Ah, the clear liquids right before surgery is different... that's a medical thing with a clear rational and even clear guidelines they all use. The pre-op diet is another animal all-together!

I had also gotten creative for the eating part, does not work for everyone but I would make my own slushies and spoon them in my mouth...Nice and crunchy and I got to chew!!! ANY SF drink mix will work
