Fast summer food ( or a great reason to grow a garden )

Its  gonna be 97 sweltering , ozone-dangerous humid degrees in the shade most of the day today in NYC .  But at 5 Am  this morning ..  I went shopping at first light .

The garden was still cool and fragrant from lilies, buddleia and the roses  that are blooming now ... the grass  tickled my barefeet - and I got to choose the iingredients for my snacks and  dishes that my family and  I will eat today at the top of their flavor  and perfection  ...

almost nothing gets stored in the refrigerator even for a day (  rather it ripens a bit more on the vine - usually theres a several day window for harvest ) .  I picked  large tomatoes  ,  a patypan  squash  , a  big  ( but not woody )  delicious  kohlrabi ,broccoli  ( which  comes every day  till literally next year  in tiny delicate florets )  .. and  three  colors of beautiful baby  string beans .

Nothing has to be picked  anywhere near the size (  or the  un-tender age )  of grocery store offerings because  the more U pick ..the more U get ..  so U pick small tender and succulent .

TOMORROW   needless to say I will pick totally different tasting things  - kale  , sweet  winter squash  ,  tiny  cherry tomatoes for tabouleh ...the next day  lettuce and herb based  based  salad  ... I deliberately  plant   a large variety .

I chopped the tomatoes into an israeli  chopped salad with onions , cucumber and  red peppers .   Took  literally  not two minutes.  Added  a tablespoon of vinegar and a little salt , regrigerated and ..  done .  A great  refreshing  snack to turn to throughout the day .  ( I can add  drained chickpeas to it  if I want to make  it  a bit more substantial too )

I ate  about a cupful of fresh raspberries as I was picking  so that  along with my protein teas was my first breakfast ..

then I  made a quick stir  fry  with the kohlrabi cut into slivers , the broccoli , beans  , ginger , onion , garlic , green curry  , tom yum  , chicken broth , butter buds  m  dry milk and coconut flavoring   (  and a bit of cornstarch for body )  .  Added  chopped fresh basil just befor e serving .   Again , took  me  about ten minutes , mostly in the vegetable prep .  DElicious and filling .

For  lunch I  will  make the squash with  mole sauce  ( again just  butter buds , garlic, onion, chicken broth and veggies  in the sauce ) .... ( also use my own garden grown  sage , chives and and thyme  in the sauce )

some kind of marinated lean meat  or fish probably

and  I saved the leaves of the kohlrabi  to  chop with de-veined kale leaves tomorrow to make a kale puree cooked with a Polish mushroom  soup base ...

by  eight AM  im done cooking  and cleaning up for the day - ( I'd also spent  quite a bit of unrushed time  listening to the birds and  tying up  my vines )  there are  three separate  prepared fresh vegetable dishes  in  the fridge , I;ve eaten a magnificent  ( huge ) breakfast  / brunch  ... and it cost me literally nothing ...    And  best yet .. tomorrow  I wont wake up  fat  ..  and I can stuff  my  face all over again    without fear of gaining ...

oh -  I also picked a bouquet  while I  was out there ...  food for the soul

My garden makes me appreciate  every single day  too  ... as the different flowers  bloom in succession  ... all  in breathtaking  never-to -be seen again  beauty...  I guess it makes time slow  down in a sense because I'm APPRECIATING  that day  and EXPERIENCING  that beauty ..  sometimes I think was STARVING myself  for experience and wonder while I was stuffing myself  with excess food.  ...

Will you adopt me???  I will clean if you cook??!! LOL

We planted our very first garden at our new home this year just tomatoes, which are starting to come in nicely.  I am looking forward in the years to come to expand our garden and grow lots more.  You are inspiring!  Thank you, it all looks delicious and makes me wants to sit out in the yard and enjoy nature!

Wow. You are a gal after my own heart. I would just die and go to heaven in your garden. And your food just looks and sound delicious. I want to be that creative with my food.
One of the years I am going to plant a garden. I just feel I cannot take on another job. After work I feel so wiped out that I dont really want to work in a garden. Yes, I love my mornings, not sure I would want to pull weeds etc. Oh well. One day.
Please keep sharing your recipes. Yum. Yum.

Yum. I wish I was on the east coast. I would stop by for a visit. I think I'm going to the farmers market on Saturday. Makes me want some fresh vegetables.

Ya'll  are TOO  cute ..     Every lightweight is invited ..seriously  ...  for goodness'  sakes I have an EMPTY  apartment across  the street  ..this is hospitality central ...

here is dinner  ...  tempeh  ( what is SO great about coconut - marinated  Tempeh ?   but I can't stop eating it ... )  with  the pattypan squash carrots  and organic cremini mushrooms in  chicken stock , garlic , onion and  chocolate based  rich MOLE  sauce from walmart  ( $ 1.39  look in the Mexican section ) ...( with  the  oil drained off )   I add a little butter buds and marsala cooking  wine  / cornstarch to it too  .

yes  its UTTERLY  decadent  and weirdly  chocolatey ..it satisfies Ur comfort-food and chocolate fix craving without ever being a dessert ...

theres  something so perfect about squash (  an  american continent vegetable )  in Mole or Pipian  or Green Mole sauce .... something so ancient and wonderful and venerable ...  U can just picture the EMPIRES  this food built as U eat it ...

also  made fresh sliced strawberries in almond  agar  based gelatin for dessert ...  practically no sugar , seaweed as  the thickener  to tweak the metabolism  a bit .. and DELICIOUS ...
