At what point does this get better?

So here I am, 7 weeks out, and I still can't keep food down.  I feel fine, don't get me wrong, but I am starting to get hunger rumblies.  I have been living on gatorade for the last week and a half or so.  I'm not bored of it or anything, because it is the only thing that stays down.  I'm not nauseaous anymore so the doc just says hang on, it'll get better.  But seriously?  Any idea when?  Because this isn't what I signed up for.  As a self pay, it stings a little more knowing that I am paying a ton of money for continued misery.  I am down 33 pounds from surgery, 43 since the 10 day liquid diet prior, so it's obviously working, but is this how I am going to be spending the next 50 years?  Consuming nothing but gatorade?  sigh

LOL  Rebecca  ..anytime now ur pouchie is  gonna relaxand Ul be able to EAT  .  Not much ..but enough .

Its important that U DO  ... because U dont want the dreaded  stricture ... stretching ...  dance ...

JUST EAT   .

its funny how some of us  are absolutely practically sneaking out of the surgical suite to  continue eating  when they absolutely  SHOULDN"T  .. and a few  literally  DONT EAT  at all...

neither is good

just follow the dietary guidelines Ur doc gave U or the ones on this site  ( U should be  getting in and keeping down about 1/4 cup of food now ) ...  and Ull do FINE .

Wow....I feel for you.  I really don't have experience with this but was very afraid of constant nausea pre surgery.   My surgeon is VERY proactive though about nausea and vomiting and pushed phenergan pretty heavily......it seems like your dr can do more if you cannot keep anything down other than gatorade......what does he say because this doesnt seem right to me????
Does he offer you any meds?

Praying this stops soon for you!!!!

Honestly? It should have been much better by now.  I didn't have any of the issues you have.

The hunger rumbies - are you taking a PPI, like Prevacid?  I know when I get that gnawing feeling, I've usually missed mine.  Its irritation and that's the symptom of it.

As far as food... I was keeping food down from day 1.  I still think something is not right with your new system.  While you've lost weight, its NOT the way its supposed to be done (by starving).

I don't know how to advise you.  I'm sure other Dr's at this point won't even talk to you.  Your Dr seems to be blowing you off.  Something is not right.

Only being able to get down gatorade at 7 weeks just doesn't seem normal to me. When was the last time you talk to your doctor and did he realize you can't keep anything else down, not even mushies?

Sometimes the doctors don't listen to us and "hear" normal complaints when our situation isn't normal and you really have to force them to listen to you.

Hi Rebecca,

I'm RNY'ed the same time as you and I've had different problems with severe pain from a tear in the Rectus Abdominis muscle (Major stomach muscle) but I haven't had a great deal of problem keeping food down apart from when I over eat or "that last bite".

Questions:

How much are you eating?

Are you chewing each piece of food 30 times? (Count it out, I know it sounds silly but try anyway)

Are you going for too dry-type food? (Try a small side of gravy/sugar free sauce perhaps or liquid from the cooking)

Are you eating too fast? (Slow it right down, hence chewing every bite 30 times)

You have lost truckloads of lbs so that's great now it's time to start learning to live a full quality life.  Baby steps at a time and don't be too hard on yourself honey.

Cheers from Karin (in Oz)

You should be just about done with the beginning phase.  Seems like I "turned the corner" at about 8-10 weeks.  I was able to keep food/liquids down but didn't feel like eating and everything tasted GROSS, and I had terrible nausea....I remember wondering , "Will I EVER feel NORMAL again???"

Of course I did....you will too.  Hang in there!!!

Hang in there.

Are you taking anything to help with acid? Like pepcid, prevacid, or does your doc have you on a different one?

Also try just a few bites at a time to get your new pouch used to puree foods or full liquids. I know at first I could only handle about an ounce, then worked my way up. Can you tolerate any protein supplements yet?  There are alot of shake recipes out there to try. I know at first there was one with yogurt and canned peaches, and it just tasted so fresh and I could tolerate 2 ounces of it at a time. I couldnt finish a shake in a day though.

It will get better. Big hugs!
